... although I typically have reservations about how charity funds are allocated.
this, unfortunately, is a big problem with many charities.
the following part is uneducated, on the topic, opinion:
i have not done much research on charities, in general or specific charities. if i am being ''pie in the sky'', i would say that i think/hope many charities are started with very good intentions. unfortunately, as charities grow, they are influenced by many outside factors, whether it be logistics, government red tape or personal issues such as greed, as examples. any one, all or any combination generally drain or divert funds from the original intention. this can lead to a very small portion of funding actually making it to the ground in the form of help or relief, not necessarily maliciously.
as card collectors, we often see shipping costs. some can be very high where the cost of shipping can eclipse the cost of the product itself. transfer this to something like food or water relief and all of the logistics can eat up much of the funding resulting in a relatively low amount of relief, for the funding provided, making it to those in need.
one can also see, even in ''not for profit'' charities, the top end of the organizational structure becoming quite wealthy. recent cases of founders buying multi million dollar mansions with the funds come to mind. i suppose this could be chalked up to either or both regulatory issues and/or personal/corruption issues.
once a charity gets so big, there are operational costs including salaries and employee pay. employees certainly need to make a living and support families. managers arent working for free either but it is also subjective on what is too much in a charity or non profit organization. an organization may need a building or office space to operate out of, what is too fancy or nice?
anyway, i think i forgot the point i was trying to make, if any, besides agreeing with CCwonder. there are many charities rife with problems and it is hard to find a good one to support.
