Bicycle 130th Anniversary Deck

Unread post by chach »

Looks like they'll be releasing another couple of decks like they did for the 125th anniversary but with nicer tuck boxes.

From Instagram
Available soon - Our 130th Anniversary deck! This deck features our Wheel back design which was used extensively in the late 1800s. The tuck is a premium vellum stock. Sheets just printed. Tucks are printed. Should be finished early next week and available on shopbicyclecards.com shortly thereafter. What do you think? #bicyclecards #CustomPlayingCards #awesome

I like it.

This is the same design they used for the prototype 125th decks...

Will it be a nicer tuck box? Vellum stock is fine, but I don't see any embossing or foiling. The 125th Anniversary decks had full foiling on the tucks, at least. Seeing as how the 125th Anniversary decks are still widely available, I'm not sure I'll be in any big hurry to pick these up. I do like the reprinting of classic vintage designs, however.

What exactly IS a vellum tuck? I've seen that term thrown around often. Is it the texture? The coloration? Coz last I knew vellum was a type of parchment.

Usually in the context of playing card tucks, vellum stock is a matte, soft stock that fees almost like suede. Classic example would be T11's Red Monarchs.

Vellum Stock is one of USPCC middle grade tuck paper stocks. It's not the lowest grade which would be your default glossy paper stock used on most USPCC decks nor is it the third grade specialty synthetics. The Classic Red Monarchs were however not printed on Vellum stock which doesn't have a suede fill only soft touch and matte. Vellum stock was used for decks such as All KW decks, Whispering Imps, most of UUSI's newer stuff and most everything coming out today that has a matte finish. In the third grade of paper stock you will find tucks like Medallions, KW Scarlett Tally Hos and others using what is called "Soft Touch". Red Monarchs used one of the Specialty Synthetic Stocks actually called "Curious Skin" and is in the forth grade of the USPCC 4 tiered stock list. The Fourth tier is so expensive they don't even offer it unless upon request.

Not trying to correct you John, just have noticed the vellum term getting miss used as well. :)

Pulled out the mentioned decks to compare. If you hadn't mentioned Medallions I never would've noticed the specialty stock. Very nice and soft!

Thanks for the info guys!

Ok, that came out wrong. Just wanted to compare now that Eoghann was doing it.
Yes, I might be the guy you remember from that thing at that place way back when.

Careful, Marcus. If you touch your imps too much you might go blind. Supposedly :ugthink:

I think these look really nice. I didn't have any problems with the design of the 125th anniversary ones and I don't see anything bad here. Nice deck to add to the collection I suppose.

I stand corrected then. When the Red Monarchs came out, I thought the tuck texture was a great improvement over the original Monarchs, and I asked T11 customer support what type of stock was used for the tucks, and I was told it was a vellum stock with speical coating. I also used to use these notebooks with special paper (since I use fountain pens) that I used for court, and the covers of those notebooks were matte and soft with almost a rubbery-suede texture similar to the Red Monarch tucks, and the manufacturer advertised the notebooks as having 90g French Clairefontaine paper with a soft vellum cover.

I guess vellum is just a general term for a type of paper, and now I understand the USPCC has 4 stock levels, one of which happens to also be called Vellum, with two levels above that called the Soft Touch stock and the ultra premium Curious Skin stock. Thanks for the info.

Just got an email from CPC that they're available on their site.

As usual, codes "sparkz" and "vjose32" net you a discount.

Victor, stay on the ball. Seems sparkz' code is a few cents better than yours.
