Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
Okay, this first deck I bought in Japan in 1990. Haven't looked at it in a while and I appreciate much more how nice the illos are. Not quite poker size but not bridge either. Cards are plastic not paper, with instructions in Japanese. My hiragana and katakana is rusty so I'm not sure what the ad card says. As in other fusion decks, the Kings are extra "joker" cards for the purposes of Hanafuda.
EDIT: I meant to add that I dig how the "cards on the cards" represent Hanafuda down to the black border and the correct size.

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
This deck, Junior Hanafuda, is very different and has its own thread (viewtopic.php?f=8&t=17152&p=193562&hili ... da#p193562), but I really like it. The designer added icons for the suits and different backgrounds for the card types. It looks like nothing else out there. Available in red and blue here: https://www.junior.cards/shop/

Ordered the “Interlude” deck a little while back, got the shipping notice today - about as non-standard a hanafuda as it gets…

This is the last one I have to share. I picked up Modern Hanafuda just post-Kickstarter and this one is all gone. You can see Sarah's archive site here: http://www.modernhanafuda.net/
Cards are about tarot-sized and come with a rulebook and a cool set of reference cards.

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
Yeah, at that time, I had played with Korean stets in college and I was completely put off by the paper sets I found in Japan (I thought they were cheap and odd), so I was excited to find this fusion deck. Knowing what I know now, I wished I could have found at least one premium traditional set to bring home.GandalfPC wrote: ↑Wed May 04, 2022 3:20 amReally like those - seen some similar, but none equal.wingedpotato wrote: ↑Tue May 03, 2022 10:41 am Okay, this first deck I bought in Japan in 1990. Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
Just spotted these - old kickstarter project, but looks like you might be able to get them from the creator here : (not so sure now - might not ship outside japan - going to do my best to try though...)
Cameron never replied, but I was able to use zenmarket.jp to order them.

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
I had DM'd Cameron via Instagram recently, and although she seemed willing to ship, she hasn't written me back after I gave her my info. If you have more luck, I'd be down for 2 decks if the price wasn't insane.GandalfPC wrote: ↑Wed May 04, 2022 1:08 pm Just spotted these - old kickstarter project, but looks like you might be able to get them from the creator here : (not so sure now - might not ship outside japan - going to do my best to try though...)
I emailed them offering to buy a half dozen and cover extra expenses for shipping troubles - figure if I manage it I might as well get an extra deck or three in case someone here wants one (at cost) - otherwise I can always use a few nifty bits on my trade list.

Hanafuda Na Pua Hawaii
I hesitated to get the Hawaii decks for some time, thinking that the non-standard ones would be cryptic, but they are not - and they are super nice…
The instruction cards are double sided:

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
Another tough get, which I am still uncertain of my ability to get - but I do believe I might have found a boyfriend of a daughter of a friend who is going to score me a pair next week…
I think if I have to go any deeper to get a deck I will eventually end up with Kevin Bacon buying it for me.
TUHWA Hwatu v3
They say its a small world, but I can say that it is really hard to reach across sometimes…

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
I don’t tend to open many poker decks (after the initial 100 or so which are plenty to keep my hands busy) - but I open all my hanafuda - so after that Hawaii deck I figured it was high time to crack open the rest of my poker size hanafuda, specifically the sparrows (which I bought for daily use anyway) and the indianwolf line - feels good to be popping seals again…

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
I may have to stop following this thread. Those meongtu and tuhwa decks look very cool! I hadn't known Hanafuda/Hwa-tu had so much variation out there. I'd always thought it was mostly adding nintendo characters to slightly altered art. This a rabbit hole my wallet can't sustain!
I like my Sparrow deck, but the Indian Wolf decks are my favorites. They are so classy and so well thought out, with a style that is unique but totally in keeping with the Hanafuda aesthetic.

In a bold attempt to empty my own wallet, and despite all common sense about what is achievable, I figured I would take a pot shot and try to put Etsy creator jamiesawyer336 and indianwolfstudios together to see if they could collaborate on a hanafuda tile set.
This was after a mahjong tile set for hanafuda came up on eBay, with a price too high and artwork not quite up to snuff let me to a fruitless search for a nice tile set (though I did see a nice one thats in a museum collection, my pink panther skills are too low to manage a heist)
Fingers crossed, but I’m not even at the point of hope yet - waiting to hear from indianwolf to see if they are game, then will see if Jamie is willing…
Should anyone know of a pretty hanafuda tile set available somewhere in the world - please do let me know - I have a spare kidney that is looking for a new home.

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
I had tried to hold the line with the dog deck, and passed on the cat one - but that was yesterday…
After seeing another pic with cards from the dog deck I went looking for more from the cat one - needless to say, both should be here soon.
The pics that sealed the deal for me:

Hanafuda mailbag - amazon japan comes through again - hopefully unbox a few this evening, lest I be overwhelmed with backlog
Sneak peek: nice metallic ink for the silver and gold backgrounds that this picture fails to capture, will see if I can’t do better later…

I hadn’t noticed the upside down one for the group shot but I did guess that the pointy logo thingy goes in the top corner from nintendo decks (confirmed with product shot)

The set is Kokuyo Koikoi Flower Tag by Tankobon

Here is the group shot of those currently awaiting unboxing, doubt I will get them all popped open before more arrive… Upside down box right side up this time

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
I think I’ve managed to get four of these - that is to say I found a shopping service and paid them and now wait to see how it works out - I ordered two different decks from Oishi Tengudo’s site through them as well - so fingers crossed all the decks from japan that I have been thus far unable to get are on the way (one of which is on eBay, but at 3x the price as you can get from japan)wingedpotato wrote: ↑Wed May 04, 2022 4:08 pm I had DM'd Cameron via Instagram recently, and although she seemed willing to ship, she hasn't written me back after I gave her my info. The site was quick to respond with a quote from the three URLs I sent them (two from tengudo, one for the Cameron deck) - so very smooth so far - they have to order them, then they ship them to me, uncertain if there is another shipping charge yet to come (or if I have just sent money into the void - I will hold off on saying which service I used until they actually come through with product)
Also giving a Korean shopping service a try for the Tuhwa Hwatu v3 deck - though I haven’t heard back from them yet, and still have the boyfriend of a daughter of a friend (thats just fun to type) in the wings to give it a try once they finish final exams - should be next week for that
There are some decks that I still desire, but as of yet don’t see them for sale anywhere - so it looks like my hanafuda shopping is now relegated to climbing up in the crows nest and keeping an eye out for rare beasts

Here is the full group shot - unboxed on the left, incomplete old eBay deck in the middle (for completeness) and the yet to unbox on the right - don’t have a count of those still on the way but figure it is about a dozen…. 37 in the pic below by quick count, should be about 50 in total once all is said and done.

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
Just heard from the Korean shopping service -I had made my request yesterday which I think was a holiday there, and its not even noon there yet today - I think they did a bang up job of turn around time - sent me an invoice which looks peachy, paid via PayPal G&S using credit card so feel quite sure that all will go smoothly. Picked up four of the TUHWA Hwatu v3 in wood boxes - total was $85 - don't think there are any additional shipping charges (service cost was $12) - will wait until product arrives as I will for the japanese service (so as not to recommend anyone here into a bad situation) - but so far all is looking well for both.
The japan order was for several decks across 2 stores, and frankly I was so happy to be able to get decks from japan (tengudo in particular, as I want to be able to snap up one of their ultra premium decks when they become available) that I don't have much idea on how well the pricing was
got 8 decks split over 2 stores and paid about $200 - some costing more than others but that averages out to 25 bucks a deck - which works for me. Paid that one via credit card directly (one that I only use for the occasional risky purchase so I can easily tell if anything goes amiss.)
Fingers remain crossed, but I think that may be overkill at this point - looks like the ocean has just shrunk to a small stream, and it is once again "a small world"
These services should exist for pretty much every country by now - we will have to get a list of trusted ones compiled post haste.
These are the two tengudo decks on the way:
Regarding Tengudo - waiting for something with Golden backs to come into stock - if you ever spot one - shout.

Nice quality cards - thick stock (but not too thick) - makes for quite the tall stack
Metallic Ink as best as I can capture it with my iPad camera (I’m sure hsbc could do better

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
Came across an Attack on Titan hanafuda preorder…. Will be here, eventually…
Made by Oishi Tengudo - so I really had no choice but to get them
These are available on Amazon Japan for preorder now as well - picked up another two from there for good measure (they have 2000 yen flat shipping so I like to get a few items at a time) - ended up at $37.50 each including shipping
- as I am not familiar with playAsia I figured it best to hedge my bet in case they didn’t come through, and with the low price having too many should not be an issue - can always sell an extra for cost or a bit of profit any day of the week…
