Hello from the UK

Unread post by nojuice »

Hey all,

I'm Nojus, (pronounced no-yus) a long time lurker and lover of playing cards, my older brother and I used to create magic tutorial videos on youtube when we were about 12 in my bedroom on the parents' big camcorder, mind you, they were probably terrible but we had fun. The first deck I ever got was the Bicycle red dragons and I beat them into the ground practicing cardistry and magic tricks, I also had a pack of shadow masters and dragon backs which I loved. I think my interest in playing cards when I was younger has majorly influenced my interests in Graphic Design and illustration today, I'm currently studying Graphic Design at Nottingham Trent University as a third year. I haven't been as involved in the cardistry community as i would've liked these past few years but I have picked up a few bits from theory 11 (I love the contrabands) and ellusionist, so i have started to build a modest collection.

My most recent University project has allowed me to re-discover my love for playing cards and Design with the creation of my own Playing Card deck, so I thought id come on here and show you guys some of what I have been working on (I hope that's alright to post here). These cards stem from research into Soviet-era Prison tattoos and the rules and beliefs held by the “thieves-in-law” - a gang within Russian Gulags and Work camps. These are just mockups and roughs but I thought it might be cool to see these actually printed, I've been looking at Kickstarter and all it entails to bring a project like this to life but am unsure as of yet. To be honest, I would just want to run a Kickstarter to see them printed physical and in people's hands, instead of doing it for profit or anything like that. Would love to know what you guys think of these and maybe any feedback you might have.

again, these are just rough mockups, but might give you an idea of my vision.

Thank you, happy to be here.

Welcome to the forum.
You want to reclaim your mind and get it out of the hands of the cultural engineers who want to turn you into a half-baked moron consuming all this trash that’s being manufactured out of the bones of a dying world.

Welcome to the UC! We have a "Drafting board" forum that you should take a look at, and run your deck through there for comments if you would like.

I'll note that if your intention is for the entire deck to be based on Russian prison motifs, you may want to avoid using non-Russian Cyrillic letters on the prison outfits (Like R, F, and Q, which do not exist in the Russian/Cyrillic alphabet.) Other than that, though, your work here is excellent!

Thank you for the compliment, Cool ill have a look at setting up a discussion there. And I can't believe those letters flew over my head thank you for pointing that out :D , always helps to get some outside opinion and a fresh view on a project!
