Talk Me Out of Selling My Decks

Unread post by theCapraAegagrus »

Getting into Precision Rifle Shooting, I've already put my baby on layaway, and will have it paid off in 2-4 weeks.

After that, more expensive things come. Like a scope mount, rings, and the scope itself. Mucho dollarinos.

Talk me out of selling my prized possessions to fund this other amazing hobby.

Congratulations on your new hobby. I'm no stranger to firearms and I think you're going to have a grand time with your new child. (It'll very likely multiply to children because you gotta feed the blasted things so much) I'm sure you don't have to sell anything to support your plinking, just buy less of one thing and more of another. So I'm not going to talk you out of anything. If you see your collection as something you can part with to make room for another thing then by all means do so. Although if you have a couple shoe boxes in the back of the closet with some very nice pairs of kicks that almost never adorn your trotters. . . perhaps consider selling the shoes and using their boxes to house your collection. Can be placed in the same location and none would be the wiser. ;)
TL:DR It's completely up to you.
We can still be friends.
I actually like playing cards.
We live in interesting times.

The R700P will be my 4th child. I already have an AR-15, DP-12, and an M18. I may build a Pistol Caliber Carbine in a year or two...

You were no help!

Cards make great targets! Put a shot through the AoS or remove center pip on a 3.
Move on, nothing to see here.

These are two interests that shouldn't clash. I'm assuming that card collecting satisfies a certain artistic desire while precision shooting satisfies some kind of sporting need. Why is one more important than the other? Can they not coexist? Don't fall into the trap of "new is better"; it may be, but not for that reason. Besides, if you're looking for 'new', fresh card designs arise far more often than that for guns. Scratching that itch with a new deck is something that will occur far more often. One of these hobbies is much more expensive than the other. Ask your wallet for its opinion before pulling the trigger. Also, notice how you used the word "prized" in referring to your cards. Doesn't seem like you're ready to let go ;)

Finally, like the last two guys wrote, hand-made Dead Man's Deck would be awesome.

That's a difficult decision! I do think RichK has a great idea. Use some of your cheaper decks for target practice, using the pips for accuracy. You could even use the Dead Man's Deck and see if you can keep the hole in tact :)

If you plan to keep collecting cards, I would say keep your collection as it tells the story of your experience. If you think you are checking out of the hobby, then a clean break might be the best way to go. Best of luck with your decision!

Are you similarly considering divesting yourself of your comic books?

I can't remember if you're the sort who gets dupes. If you do (and, for some reason, I don't think you do), you may want to try paring down on the dupes and see how it feels to sell those off before you touch the heart of your collection.

If you don't, allow me to suggest caution: hold onto what you have for a little while longer, and see how you feel in a year. If you don't sell them now and then realize that was the wrong choice, you can always sell them later. If you *do* sell them now, and then realize that was the wrong choice, you can't easily undo that decision down the road. (Not without spending a lot of moolah.)

I can count the number of decks I've bought this year on one hand. It's not a matter of "clashing" hobby-wise, it's a matter of, "this rifle loadout is gonna be expensive and I have other valuables I can spare to make it happen sooner".

One of the hobbies can save my life. I haven't played a card game in over a year. So, really, my comic book collection and playing card collection both "clash" and comics win without it being close lol.

I will definitely be doing, or trying to do, a shooting-related giveaway for the next DotY.

There's 1 run of trade paperbacks that I'm considering to sell. That's because I recently saw them go for 3x what I paid, and I have 2 other more-limited hardcover runs of the same series. So, essentially, I have 3 copies of Spawn 1-125, and the cheapest of them all can make me good money. Other than that, I'm not really considering sales of any comic books.

I don't have many duplicate sealed copies of playing cards.

I think I might start with some smaller stuff in which I don't have all of an artist's collection. Like Gio. I have his first 15-or-so decks. But, damn, Eva is in there...

When I moved away from coin collecting, I sold many of my more valuable and easily sellable coins. That has still left me with a sizable collection. I guess one of these days when I retire I will take the time to divest myself of the rest of the collection. In the meantime, I enjoy still having many fun and interesting coins that doesn't tie up a ton of my capital. Sell how you want. The nice thing about playing cards is that it really doesn't have to be too draining on your wallet if you will hold yourself to just the new standard issues and avoid the bling of the limited and gilded versions. You may have no major resale opportunity, but also no major investment.

I don't think I'm ever gonna go full-out of the hobby. It's just that "reinvesting" into a different one usually means liquidating some of the better stuff that you've collected.

It's gonna be a tough road to travel.

I know how much it takes to change your mind, so I didn't bother trying

But I have two assumptions here; (1) this is mainly about limited funds and thus the inability to sustain too many hobbies, and (2) you're not the type of guy who half-asses anything, so going into this new hobby you want to whole-ass it :ugthink:

Based on those assumptions, it's just a matter of what you want the most (decks or guns). Can I also assume you've already started to cut back on deck purchases? That means deck collecting is taking more of a back seat, so it's not a huge stretch to sell off the most expensive and least wanted (by you) decks you have.

In any case, going forward I think Brad's suggestions are sound. Remember that buying back any decks you sell will probably come at an additional cost. Would you be satisfied with the holes that the decks you'd sell would leave? Personally I don't think collector's items are comparable to equipment for a "sport-type" hobby. Are you in a hurry to buy this equipment, or could you relatively easily save up what you might have spent on high-end decks in the near future?

I'd separate out any decks you for sure want to sell, and that you for sure want to keep - then the pile of what's left is that much smaller. Start selling off decks based on how much you like them weighed against price and ability to replace

I would be very interested in open decks :D

I can hold the amount of decks that I purchased this year in 2 hands.

I definitely won't be selling anything that would give me remorse (that I would want to "buy back" later).

Considering the election, etc, there's basically stuff that I really need right now. Also, ammo is something that has multiplied in price, and I don't have non-emergency surplus of.

I may have to create an Open Deck sales thread, then. Most of my "used" stuff is in great condition. What kind of % discount do you expect when buying open decks?

Obviously the more money saved the better  But really, as long as it's cheaper than the original retail price then I'd consider it for sure

I guess you could look at how webshops like Wounded Corner or SoCal price their open decks compared with new ones to get a sense of what's common

That's what I was going to say too. Depending on the deck, of course, but 50% of MSRP seems fair.

I'd definitely consider buying opened mint-condition decks too, btw.

Re: Talk Me Out of Selling My Decks

There isn't really a market value for open decks. The 50% idea is nice sure. The reality is, it's whatever you'd find acceptable for the open deck isn't it? Bulk lot the opens imo at a min bid that's the least you'd find acceptable. Everything above that is gravy and you only gotta ship it to one place. Less work, one box with some packing material. Less hassle as it goes to only one local and you're out of opens. Worth the buyers shipping that way too.

If it doesn't sell you can try the Hollywood method right? Cherry pick some decks out. List it again at a 20% higher starting price with a new name that's similar to the original lot. Someone'll buy it then, they just saw a similar lot last week. This one has less and costs more, yep, better better! Use the cherry picked decks as the spin off lot. ;)
TL:DR It's completely up to you.
We can still be friends.
I actually like playing cards.
We live in interesting times.

I'd definitely consider buying opened mint-condition decks too, btw.
Being a comic collector, I don't think I'd use the term "Mint" for my open decks. They have usually been used for 3 hands of poker.

I have all of next week off, so I think I'm going to start my 1st big sales thread then.

Awesome, right when I'm broke...
... oh. I forgot. I'm always broke.
You want to reclaim your mind and get it out of the hands of the cultural engineers who want to turn you into a half-baked moron consuming all this trash that’s being manufactured out of the bones of a dying world.

I got lazy AF on my 10-day vacation. Sorry, guys. I do have a personal deadline of having a complete list together by the end of 2020. Maybe, after the holidays, people will have the budgets they need if they're interested in some of my open deck combos. It's coming!
