King Arthur - Riffle Shuffle

Unread post by brownsl »

Riffle Shuffle is releasing a King Arthur deck via Kickstarter. The campaign starts this Sunday at 11am EST. They have a picture of the top of the tuck boxes on Instagram. There is a red deck and a green deck. I am on my phone and do not know how to save it and upload it here.

It looks like this will be an RS deck that I like.

First of all, let me just complain about them having no less than 10 pictures of the tucks before getting to the cards. So redundant.

Anyway. The back design is nice, but I think some of the detail might get lost here. If you have to hold the card four inches from your face to really appreciate it, I don't feel like it's worth it. Also, I feel like the red and green colors could be swapped for something that pops more, or just looks better in general, but I'm not sure. The rest of the deck is pretty solid, but nothing awe-inducing. Good to see a fully custom deck, including pips. The foiled version will be interesting to see, if they reach the stretch goal for it.

The theme is something that I really like and I am in for an EB brick. This might be my favorite RS deck yet.

I think all the detail will get lost. Like you said, "If you have to hold the card four inches from your face to really appreciate it, I don't feel like it's worth it.". There's way too much detail on everything that gets lost. And way too much gold.
Move on, nothing to see here.

I think Toms right as well in saying that a lot of the finer detail will be lost. I always think that RS decks are so close to being great. I don't know whether it's their colouring / shading or something else. They just always seem a little off for me. Just leaves me imagining what the deck could of been in someone elses hands.

It's almost as if the deck they put out is a counterfeit version of the real deck. If that makes sense?

I agree these chaps seem to be very proud of this tuck. With so many photos it could be that they (the ultimate powers that be) feel it is the top selling point for the decks? Quite possibly it could be.

==============================================Thoughts================================================

This is what my eyes see.

I like the inner tuck a whole lot more than the outer tuck. For me, it's better and screams Arthur more than whatever the dude with a lance does. It's got the whole lady of the lake going on with the grail up in the top flap. Night and day reveals on the tuck flaps. It's fun, more "funner" than some chap on a pony who may or may not have anything to do with something but probably has nothing to do with anything. Didn't Arthur have some bit to do with stone pullin swords and all that? Where's the plucking free of the blade, I feel like that would have been fun on the tuck. Oh wait, wait, I'm reading the words they got typed up about this now.
On the top of the box, we see King Arthur wielding a spear, sitting atop of a horse in battle armour. The king is carrying a majestic crown and looks fearlessly ahead of him, ready to fight for his kingdom.
So I was wrong, good ole Arthur was known for spear wieldins! Get um with yon stick Arthur, get um but good!
The back of the box features an even more complex design, where we see a mirrored picture of the king on his horse, this time carrying a long staff.
Yup, stick gettin, that's what's afoot... or rather a horse. Pardon my not understanding how this translates into King Arthur. I always thought it was Excalibur swordiness that was the weapon of choice. Oh wait I see the sword now! Lost among the whatever in the background of the card back on the back of the tuck. Not foiled, doesn't look like it's going to get any emboss either but who knows it could, is infact a sword plunged tip first into a rock! I thought it was a cross for some reason, may have been those lines radiating forth. I don't know, but it's been found! I feel much better about that now. Sword found, still in the rock, so it's a con and that chap on the pony aint Arthur. He'd pluck it forth. I think the guy with the stick says, Nii.

This is how I interpreted what my eyes saw. :?

It's a pretty tuck, it really is. Lots of red and gold or green and gold. Real beauties, both of these tucks. I particularly like the art deco elements on the top tuck flap in gold. Quite striking. It's clear that this is a very clever deck, far too clever for me. As I said I don't understand half the tie in's and that's okay. I'm not the smartest guy in the room and I don't need to be. I just like it when things make some sense to my eyes, so that I feel like I'm participating with the room on the same basic level as everyone else. Which I clearly am not in this case, because the only thing that says Arthur about the face of that tuck is the text.

The cards themselves, the pics are terribly small and I have to put forth way to much effort to see them. I just don't care enough to do it at this point after ALL that tuck and the mess that becomes the card back in metallic gold inks. (There is one large image of each half a card back, I can see those.) I see these courts with all kinds of whatever going on and I feel exhausted. Do I really want to go through the whole process of opening up an image editor so I can blow the friggin courts up so that my visually impaired self can begin to take a gander at the blasted things? Naa, not right now I don't. The campaign should have considered not everyone see's so well. (These are extra small for fine details.) Would I be in for more than a pair if I did and discovered that the courts were the most mind blowing cards I've ever seen in my life? They probably aren't, doesn't matter.

So it comes to be that I am once again, not the target audience for these playing cards. If I was the target audience they would have made this campaign more visually accessible to me. The actual nuts and butter of the campaign, the cards man. I've been hit with so much tuck I just don't give a, I think we get it. While I like the Inner tuck and I like the AoS, these aren't the decks for me.

I do hope this funds to foil cards and all the whistles and bells! They're planning limits of 300, 250 and 100 gilded private access whatever from this limited 2,500 printed... so 650 extra super limited special of the 2,500 limited edi. . . lost the plot, but exciting possibly for someone. I know there's going to be at least 203 people out there that love this deck and adore the design. I'm just not one of them, from what I can see. I remind you that this opinion has been mine own. I look forward to seeing yours. :)

Bah, what am I thinking? I should back this on the premise that there isn't any stupid bog oak medallions nonsense they're hustling.
Yea forget all the rest, maybe I'm on board now! :ugdance:
Not really, but maybe!

that's because the tuck is the highlight of the deck. Pass for me. Don't like the cards at all, back design is to convoluted and the faces are meh for me personally

It's hard not to laugh and have a good time on this forum isn't it?

I'm pleased so many folks like this set of playing cards. They're not posting here and that's okay, I'm just curious what they like so much. I think it could be the Pips. Regardless of the flaws I and other see they're having a strong campaign and there certainly is a lot of work involved in the deck. I look forward to August first to see how the warm up to thunder dome goes. That happens on the third maybe, I don't remember. There were a bunch of dates in the 650. Point is there's some fun to see on the horizon and I'm going to enjoy a little popcorn while watching. :)

I don't dislike this deck. I don't love it either. But I do think the cover art on the tuck is from a bag of flour. I could be wrong. Inside of the tuck is super nice and pops in the green. But as someone said above the red and green deck selection is very Christmas-y. I am also tiring of the rare deck ransom strategies being used so often for what is usually just a tuck swap or recolor/gilding. I love limited decks and I went for it on the 666 and the other deck (don't remember the name) that kinda reminds me of this one, but there are so many offerings and limited funds. So I will be skipping this one...maybe.

On the campaign page, down a bit toward the end there, they have a list of guilded's and when they will be available. That's the 650 decks I tease about out of the 2,500 limited decks, unless the guildeds are extras somehow. Oh pardon my math, I've long claimed not to be the smartest, it's 5,000 decks total with 650 guildeds taken out of that batch. Regardless they came in knowing the shiny shine would bring in the folks who like shined up stuff and anticipated the guilding desires. It's going to be a fun campaign to watch.

brownsl wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 4:58 pm Surprises me that there is so much dislike for this deck so far in UC.
Why is that? It's a pretty intense group of opinionated card lovers who love different kinds of designs. A lot of this very fine membership will comment on what they consider to be flaws. I think it's human nature to complain about bad weather though isn't it? We certainly praise the sunshine when it turns up. By the way, I really am glad you like this deck. If we all liked and disliked the same things we'd all be crunching on corn chips instead of pig skins or marshmallows. :)

I don't mind the tucks at all, but I prefer the interiors and think that design should be front and centre. It's the courts which don't do it for me, something about the art style just isn't working for me.

As an aside, if watching kickstarter campaigns is your idea of fun I'd hate to see what your idea of boredom is!

No shame indeed my friend. Just like Fes wrote, different strokes for different folks, and it's good like that.
I have to fight for too much sought after decks so, I'm happy if the competetion emptys the wallet for stuff I don't care at all.

Still, first is the 666 then Sovereign, then Sirocho then these. Although each deck is fully customed and nice for display. i feel they are getting repetitive somehow. One deck, limited 5000, full custom with a ton of softstyle designs, foil on box, different colour, one foiled, one gilded, one super gilded? Feel like mass produced items.

So I was wrong, good ole Arthur was known for spear wieldins! Get um with yon stick Arthur, get um but good!

Well he was fictional so I guess he was known for different things depending which folk tale you listen to.

Although each deck is fully customed and nice for display. i feel they are getting repetitive somehow. One deck, limited 5000, full custom with a ton of softstyle designs, foil on box, different colour, one foiled, one gilded, one super gilded? Feel like mass produced items.
Feels like that for sure! Although Iloved all of those decks except this King Arthur one, which I kinda like it's starting to rub me the wrong way. I do like the RS premium decks much better than their cardistry-style decks but they are all starting to look the same. Looks like RS have found a formula and is proceeding to beat the death out of it. I have been singing their praises lately, but they need to change it up a bit before I support them again on a project. Not to say that they won't, as I have had good experiences with them so far. We will see.
I haven't slept for ten days, because that would be too long.

You do have a very valid point and I concur with you, fictional or very likely so. I also agree that I haven't read the latest and greatest tales, the exploits of Arthur the spear wielding king. I am unsure that said tales of the mystical spear wielder Arthur king exist. Still I do concede the point. Thank you for the fun it made me consider the side note. :)

Side note; I suspect that any tale in which focuses on King Arthur getting all dressed up in his full metal regalia complete with yon head dress there then focuses on his riding forth to bring, God knows what to God knows who with his legendary mighty weapon, a long staff. Well, I think it'd be safe to say that in todays world, this story is very likely, most definitely, probably erotica.

There is this little thing of a pandemic happening. So that whole bit probably has an effect but I love people (they're my favorite) and I love playing cards. So it is a lot of fun for me to see this sort of very positive thing happen. Even more so when it's around poor design with a flashy name slapped on it and after thoughts added in for said flashy names sake. I mean, wow! This is great! :D To think, there are going to be people elated to have gotten one or two or three of those limited 650 gilds. Treasures for them to cherish and enjoy. I love it, I think it's magnificent fun. There's even the extra limited limited edition gildy to 100 that people will engage in KS battle for, oooh the imaginary bluds! AND they planned it out like this. I love this campaign!

=================================== Not a campaign Hater =============================

I really do love this campaign. I share it with people who are not yet into playing cards. I say "Go to kickstarter type in King Arthur and click the middle one. Not the one on the end that's a Harem audio thing entirely different there. The one in the middle, that's the playing cards. Check it out!" Then I hang up whatever device I was using to speak with them on. Yep, I speak with people on the phone and on voip's. Not just sharing a links, they gotta work for it. :D
TL:DR It's completely up to you.
We can still be friends.
I actually like playing cards.
We live in interesting times.
