Art Nouveau by Otto Benz for Renault

Unread post by Räpylätassu »

Not a new deck but an amazing looking vintage one.

Art Nouveau playing cards designed by Otto Benz for Renault in 1987, printed by ASS Altenburger in Germany. Sold as a double deck.

On my personal wishlist. And... an ebay listing for an opened double deck (in new like condition) with the box for 99,99 £. I absolutely love this deck.... I want it so badly. But that price is quite something. If it is still available by next month, I might end up buying it.

Was this deck made for Renault the car manufacturer or does it mean another Renault?
Since I drive a Renault it would fit for me, but not for that price. :/

Most definitely, the Renault logo is on the cards.

No worries, I got your back :D .

I'm kinda split on this deck. One part of me shares the point of view of montenzi and scottbre. But they are somehow still pretty interesting and the illustrations are quite nice. It would be cool to see them with better colour choices, imo.

Got my set!

Basically I didn't read the description carefully enough, the listing was for a single deck in a double deck box. However the seller found another single deck without a tuck box and added it to the box for free. Funnily enough, the extra deck I got has the traditional english indices and the original listed deck has the french indices. For whatever reason though, both have a "K" for King, even the French one. The two decks actually have a slightly different back design, the difference being on the Renault logo. Also the stock is a bit different on them, the French one has a bit more stiffer and sturdier stock, the english one slides a bit better.

Oh, and all the cards have metallic ink on them.

Thanks for the photos. Can't wait to find a set myself. I know what you mean about not noticing something in the item description. I also recently bought what I thought was a double deck set to realize when I got it that it was only a single deck in a double deck box. It was clearly stated as such in the description. Grr.

The head gear of the first shown Joker is quite interesting. Looks familiar, or is it just me? :D

By the way, the indices in your photos are German and neither French nor English - König, Dame, Bube or Bauer.

Ah damn of course... V as in Valet in French. That's what you get when you write messages after a 9,5 hour workday in a foreign language at 10 pm :D Although I have to say that the 9,5 hour workday was a lot less than my typical monday, usually they are 10+ hours...
