Pip Painting. Handmade. 100% unique.

Unread post by STLBluesNut »

If you have seen my Instagram, you'll see in the past I have done some paintings. Recently, I have gotten the bug again plus some new ideas that came to me for doing some Christmas painting gifts.

I did the painting and from the pour off that dries into sort of a skin, I cut out pips. I place those pips on the painting. They aren't adhered or sealed down yet.

What do you think? Would this be desirable as a collector? As a giveaway, perhaps a DOTY award? Do you think others would purchase such an item?

These could be done in any color combinations or even with pips that weren't the same colors as the painting.

I have to admit it looks very nice. I personally don't want anything to do with cards or pips and other well-known symbology outside of the decks themselves. But I have seen plenty of what I would call tacky card/poker-related things in other people's photos on reddit etc, and this isn't tacky at all so I'd imagine there would be plenty of interest.

Edit: In relation to later comments, the subtleness of the pips is exactly why this works for me.

It looks great! Loving the effect of your pouring technique. I would have liked the edges of the Spade and Diamond to be a bit more defined like the Heart. I'd be interested to see one with contrasting colors...maybe orange and blue :)?

Haha, I only came here to critique it lacks orange! But you've kinda beat me to it.

I'm with Adonael on this one. I don't like the symbolism outside of playing cards. But I do like the change in depth that the pip bring to the painting. I personally would like to see this done with more abstract shapes or for example with the shape of an object.
For the part of buying something like this - If there is something that I lack more than money to buy decks, it is space to hang all the prints I already own  !

IMO it needs to be in red (and black?), but they're cool.

Thanks for all the feedback. Other colors are no problem. This is one I did in silver, blue and white as a Christmas-y attempt but there wasn't enough white. So this was kind of an experiment and proof of concept.

I think this looks really good. I like how the pips are done. Slightly more noticeable would be nice.

These look fantastic. I am envisioning one done in dark blue and action green....
We did a small client event at work where we had an artist instruct us in tip-cup or pour painting. What a fantastic craft and I think these are great

Other colours might look good, too, but I like this as it is; I like the monochromaticness (new word) and the subtlety of the pips themselves. Nicely done!

How big is the painting? From the photos, the pips are too subtle. It would be nice if the pips were more visible IMHO. (Diamond in the top photo, Spade in the bottom blends in too much)

The painting is 10" x 20". I agree they do blend in a bit too much. I am finding I need to use the pour off from a different painting or with a bit different colors. I'm not done experimenting, I am just working on some christmas ones as they will be gifts.

So I decided to try and paint some outlines on the shapes to give them a border. They definitely stand out more.
