Franken Decks

Unread post by Bradius »

I just got word that WIll Roya is putting together some Franken Decks for sale. As soon as I know more, I will post it here. I am super excited. They are fun, especially to make yourself.

More information:

$9.99, we assembled a batch of 54, not an easy task. If this one sells out we will put out a v2 with all different cards. Look for them in early 2019.

So, $9.99 each, but only 54 were made, but may make more if they do well.

Maybe this is a stupid question, but what is a frankendeck? Made up of 52 cards, each from one of 52 decks?

Besides directly catering to those single swap card collectors (which is a group that seems to be disappearing altogether these days), this might
also be pretty interesting for those that don't open their decks but would still like to actually see & feel the backs and faces of a card in person rather than living vicariously through review vids on a screen. I could also imagine such an assortment of different cards would be appealing to those that want to use 'em in alternative ways; for example, in crafting or whatever in which you're only interested in one or a few and perhaps only for the beautiful back design. This way, there's no need to invest in buying an entire deck to create something that might not be worth it's value in return and leave you with an excess of supplies.

I'm really curious how well this first batch will sell and if these "Franken Decks" will be somethin' worth offering regularly.

For those in Will's Deck of the Month club, he sends a number of sample cards with each shipment to show off other decks he has for sale, to get some interest in us buying them as well. Then some folks decided to put the cards to some use by building Franken Decks with them. It has kind of now become a fun DIY project for us. If you want, when I get back to work, I can make a photo of mine. I have had a hard time with a few cards, so I stole the missing few cards from an incomplete Heretic deck my son mangled at camp a couple of years ago. For card play, it is useless, but one of my funner decks. I guess for me it is like a ball of rubber bands. I like the process as much as the result. I also work to come up with the best combination of cards for my Franken Deck. My cast off pile is getting huge.

yea, the process of just putting it together sounds like a fun little challenge in and of itself but I could imagine that after quite some time of acquiring a significant number of singles, it'd also be neat to organize them into not just simply a 'Franken deck' but a 'Franken deck' of a specific theme - like the easiest would be one in which all cards feature the same main color of your choice in it's palette; for example, an "all-red Franken deck" :P

also, yes! def share some pics! :D

I love getting the single cards in the Pip Box subscription for all the reasons mentioned above. I don't put together a Frankendeck with them however. Instead, I put them in 8 1/2 x 11 card sleeves. It's like having a mini uncut sheet with all different cards. These then go into a 3 ring binder that I can leaf through or show off to friends. I hope Will Roya will continue to include these because I feel like the single cards are one of the things that makes the Pip Club subscription service such a great value.

I know a number of folks love the single cards and there are collectors collecting singles like aces, jokers etc. I feel uneasy if I don't have a complete deck with at least 54 cards.

I'm sure I'll get at least one, because the idea is really neat.
From a deck handling stand point, would having the Franken Deck all from the same manufacturer, with the same stock and finish be a bigger factor.
I'm feeling like an all Cartamundi B9 linen finish, or an all crushed Bee stock or regular Bicycle stock, make for better decks over all.

This is for people are new to PCD (PlayingCardDecks.com), Will also inserts about 3-4 random cards for every package you order from him. Considering all the great clearances and special day sales, you can build a collection pretty fast. I'm at 19 cards out of 54 , with 2 repeats.

Okay, below are photos of my Franken Deck. I still have 4 cards missing that have been filled in with cards from a partial Heretic Deck I have. I am sure others are putting their decks together differently, but this is mine. It is a fun project.

Sorry, but the backs are flipped upside down. I thought I had it fixed. Sigh. Anyway, you get the idea.

Ooo, that's a very impressive variety. Mostly from Pip Club? How many does he give to the pip club anyway?

BTW, the Franken Decks are on sale now!

All of those cards are from playingcarddecks.com, except for the four filler cards from a broken Heretic deck I have. I get a bunch of sample cards every month in the Deck of the Month club. I am guessing it is like 10 a month. I also get several with every order.

Thanks for letting me know the Franken Decks were on sale. I picked up two and a Lone Star deck I have been meaning to add.

Ah, that explains the more diverse group of cards and how you can get almost a full deck so fast! I'm good with what I have right now. 2018 was very expensive and like you, I've got to be more selective on what I back on KS and purchase.

The make one Franken Deck out of random cards, I have 132 other duplicate cards. Even so, I still need four cards to finish the full random deck. I end up with dozens of one card and none of another card. That is what makes this fun and challenging.

My assembled Franken Decks from http://www.playingcarddecks.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; just arrived. It is a nice mix. Personally I would have included one, maybe two NOC decks, but I think three versions made it in. I also like wild pip decks and non-standard courts, and it was more of a mix. Probably a few more standard than non standard. I actually may use these as starters to mix with my extra cards and further modify them. For $10 each, it is a fun addition.
