Betrayers by Thirdway Industries - now live on KS

Unread post by sms69x »

A new deck by Giovanni Meroni:

Image

http://www.thirdway.it/betrayers/betrayers.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It is finally something different from his previous works. And it is looking good. Hope THIS IS NOT a 3-4 deck series.

It's stated on the second page that it's only a 2 deck series

Love it, and its certainly different enough artistically that the usual "more of the same" complaint doesn't hold water this time.

This is more like it! I knew Gio had more in him. This is a significant departure from his usual style, but I can still see hints of Gio in there (whatever you do, Gio, never lose the cleavage!). Sooner or later, Gio had to come up with something newer and fresh, and here it is. Well done!

Thanks Sergio for insta-post Betrayers!

I am happy for the positive feedback - I said I was working at something very different ;-)
Even if the style is new, there are a lot of connections with my other decks. The story will be dark, deep and (hopefully) fun.

I had a lot of fun with this one.

Since I know that the printer is very important for many UC members, I want to anticipate that I am evaluating USPCC and Cartamundi.

My idea is launch this in October - I will wait at least that Odissea is printed and ready to be shipped before launch the Kickstarter.

Thank you so much for choosing the printer out of consideration for members here! I would strongly suggest USPCC because their stock is a lot more durable and isn't too soft, plus their metallic inks (especially the gold) would look great on this deck. However, if you are considering foil (keeping my fingers crossed!) then please go with Carta Mundi. I don't think you can beat their pricing for foiled decks.

This Cartamundi project cold foil looks great, or USPCC so far metalluxe .

Wait a minute, I think I have an idea!

HEY GIO, WHY NOT USE CARTAMUNDI COLD FOIL OR USPCC METALLUXE PROCESS FOR THIS DECK.

Glad I could get that totally original and uninfluenced thought out of my system.

Not sure the classic gold foil really works with this deck honestly. Maybe the colored foil similar to that of the NEO Wave project though...

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet but I think it is really nice and that you have omitted the line work in your designs and gone with strickly shapes and color to create the forms. It is a really great change up from your other great work. Using Metal Lux is awesome but you can be sure to add at least another zero to your total production costs.

I agree with different enough. It is still familiar in its use of somewhat signature geometric forms, colour palette etc. A first step in the right direction of something significantly different down the road perhaps

Hello guys! :)

Betrayers is a bit different than my other projects from the colors point of view too: my other projects used 4/5 solid Pantone colors, Betrayers uses many more colors (due to gradients) and I need to print it in CYMK, like The Evil Deck. This means that I have to stay away from Metallic/Neon inks for this time.

I am in love with Cartamundi Cold Foil (Lorenzo's fault haha) - I don't think I will use it on Betrayers, but I will definitely design a deck specifically for cold foil and/or Metalluxe.
Probably foil is not very compatible with Betrayers style, but I'm still designing it, so... never say never in this phase.

Thank you to everyone for the feedbacks and the nice hints ;-)

I have to agree. I think this deck screams metallic ink instead! And please please please USPCC..

This style though with sections of color can be adapted to cold foil (or MetalLux) to great effect. The best example is how Neo:Ultra used cold foil to really let sections of gradient color really give life to the cards so that they just shimmered as you handle the cards. It just takes playing cards to a different level. However, it sounds like you get the point and it is something you are looking at. In the meantime, I really like the design. It is new for you, yet still very much has your unmistakable design in it. I can't mistake it for anyone but you. That is a good thing. I can't wait to learn more about the story that goes with the cards.

Couldn't disagree more. Gio, buddy, you know I love you - and god knows it's never been a dealbreaker for me before and won't be now - but please, please, figure out a better way to draw boobs. Your ladies are beautiful and it makes me sad that you keep stapling tennis balls to their ribcages.

That's the only stylistic complaint I have to register. I'm glad to see a fresh look and I'll be looking forward to picking it up at the campaign launch in the fall. :)

I have to agree with Merlebird here. Just as men and women have different chins and noses and shoulders, yeah, women have different boobs. Variety is the spice of life, and all that. :)

I don't even care if they all have big boobs! I just want boobs that are shaped like boobs. I'm not anti-double-D, I'm anti-assuming perfectly spherical boobs.

@Merlebird - Obviously I'm not an hyper-realistic illustrator, so I stylize my characters a lot. I'm aware that there are many anatomycal artistic licenses in my decks - both for make the huge figures I design fit the card, and also because I like "geometrize" everything.

Anyways, I understand your critique and I think it's clever, constructive and useful. I'm definitely going to follow your advice on one of my next projects. Thank you !

However, I really like how the Betrayers shapes turned, even if they're not realistic :)

@Rousselle - Actually, my queens wear different sizes - I know, it's hard to pay attention ;-)

You guys. Next time Gio draws boobs he'll be thinking of me. In his gazongas I will be immortal.
