Yeah he's talked a little about this one on his Patreon. He worked with two other artists for this one. Iirc the character art is from a different artist. JBP designed the layout, pips, etc.

I like the idea of a Chandler deck but the art style doesn't work for me.

? I find that rude KG. Did you want me to expand and say that the OP pics would have me buy the deck whereas those latest wouldn't.
If you want 'old man', I am wondering whether I am supposed to be into the unravelling of a mystery.
Why is it that everybody wants to tell me a story (Gio's emails have joined this group too)
I read plenty of books by great writers and I also like to buy good decks of cards.
I don't need card designers to tell me stories other than to 'paint me a picture' - drawings not words please
I remember in my early days of collecting about 5yrs ago, one of the first decks I bought was Vengeance of Witches.
It came with an accompanying booklet.
I remember suggesting to Marianne that instead of a booklet about the characters (I could imagine or look them up myself), I would prefer a booklet about how the deck was crafted, the inspiration, the early drafts etc. A bit like what you find in Lorenzo's Anthology book
I may be getting off your point now, indeed your point may be to discourage me from posting so I had better just hit submit

Is it a bad time to say that I find the new better than the OP?
Perhaps best I just hide here behind one of the knocked over tables and wait till the scuffles over…

Or I can hop in and try to resolve it:
Honeybee is not typically a foil man. His art needs no bling.
KG loves JBP, probably one of his biggest fans. You won’t see him back down from defending his passion for the artist.
Gentlemen, no need to kerfuffle.

I agree with this to an extent. Specifically regarding this thread, JBP is telling a story because he was hired to illustrate another writer’s work. He’s also a published author himself, so it’s natural that narrative seeps into his art. In this case, a writer is using a designer to adapt a story into playing cards, and since we’re playing card collectors, those worlds just happen to collide.
Some in the community really enjoy the stories attached to decks. TheCardGuy, for instance, does a great job of bringing Gio’s decks to life in his reviews.
Personally, I like when a deck has a theme or “universe” of sorts, but I’m less drawn to the heavily narrative-driven ones. What I find most interesting are the stories behind the art: what inspired the creator, what design choices were made along the way, what early drafts looked like. Lorenzo does this wonderfully through his Patreon updates. Lotrek from time to time as well.

I too am happy when a deck has a theme. The storytelling I was referring to is not how a deck might tell a story but the promotional guff that we sometimes have sent to us. Likewise the accompanying books we are seeing more and more as some designers now think that they are authors too or that they have to do this. Gio is definitely sending out emails with a narrative right now and going on KG's "The mystery continues to unravel" I was guessing that this deck was also using this selling method. I am a fan of JBP but actually forgot he is doing the art for this deck - not that it is relevant to what I am talking about.
YMMV, it is just an opinion that I hope I am allowed to express

I was teasing Bee. Sorry if I offended you brother. Meant no harm by it. I don't get bothered by other people's taste. I was just ribbing you since I saw you comment on several posts about why didn't like them and I've seen folks here call you grumpy before and I was riffing off that (a grump-bee if you will). Again man, my bad.

Ill likely back this one because I really like the theme and story and JBP decks always look better in person. Im iffy on some of the artwork and tuck design though. That artwork was done by the original artist for the graphic novels. Ill see when the campaign releases. Artistically my brain keeps comparing the artwork to the Richard Stark's Parker graphic novels done by Darwyn Cooke, which are absolutely phenomenal. He's a legend though (RIP) so that's probably an unfair comparison.

No worries, maybe one becomes too sensitive when you get old and don't like The Simpsons (yep - I am that one person in the world)

I really admire Jack’s work and usually love his decks, but the Hitchhiker deck and this one don’t click for me. His original designs have a unique charm that I personally connect with more than the commissioned IP projects. I’ll be skipping this one, but I’m looking forward to seeing what he creates next.
