Hello from Down Under

Unread post by hanzamonstas »

Hey everyone,

It's great to finally be here. I'm not sure what took me so long, seeing that I've already created two decks of playing cards. Honestly, being in Australia sometimes makes the distance feel extra real - geographically, but also creatively. Most of the playing card discourse, production, and collector culture seems so centred in the US or Europe; I feel like an outsider looking in. But I've finally decided to jump in and say hello, hoping to connect with others who love thoughtful, art-forward deck designs, and maybe even find a few folks who also feel a little out-of-place in the world of mass-market cards.

Looking forward to sharing some of my work soon, and learning from all the brilliant creators and collectors here ☺️

And we're looking forward to seeing your work soon! :-)

We've had a couple other designers from Australia pass through here, although I don't recall names right at this moment. One had done a deck of "coloring book" playing cards that you were actually meant to color in. That one was kinda cool.

We've also got a couple New Zealand-based designers who are top-tier. There's at least one from Africa, a team from China comes to mind, and a couple from Indonesia, plus a fantastic fellow from India who is less active here than in the past but I saw a post from him just recently. (Actually, now that I think about it, he might be in Australia, but he originally came from India...? My memory is not what it should be these days.)

You're right, though, that most of the action does appear to be taking place in North America and Europe.

All that said, we are very much an international community, and happily welcome you aboard! You'll find most of the action takes place in the "New & Custom Decks" section, but you'll never miss a conversation if you start each visit with the drop-down in the upper left-hand corner labeled "Quick Links" and choose "Unread posts."
