pure code playing cards - thoughts?

Unread post by dberg369 »

hi gang,
I'd love some initial thoughts on a high-concept deck I'm releasing on Kickstarter.
Whilst I'm an artist who has always enjoyed card games, I'm not a collector so I would welcome feedback from the community.

I'm fascinated by how underneath every game, app, and website is just written code.
But what if that was applied to playing cards?

And how can the exposed code feel realistic, yet aesthetic and minimal?

In the pursuit of this brief, these Pure Code Playing Cards forgo every traditional design element.
No imagery. No symbols. No corner mirroring. No back pattern.
They're truly pure code.

Draft concept:

Whilst the code on each card is minimal, they'll be a reference card/booklet that has longer form code so the playing card deck hyperthetically 'works' from a coding perspective.

I'm currently finalising the design, including the backs and tuck box, deciding on various card features (eg, gilded?), and working out Kickstarter reward tiers and pricing.

I would love any suggestions and feedback in this thread.
You can also get launch alerts and vote on features here: https://www.backerkit.com/call_to_actio ... 20/landing

Thanks gang!

I think that even as a novelty deck that some might like to have fun with, they would probably prefer the cards to be 2 way - there is obviously plenty of room to have the code top and bottom

As a programmer I would have to say you went with “pure formatted data” no “code” involved (which would imply instructions, not data).

I think the idea has potential, especially within the Cardistry community. I think the execution needs to change.

i appreciate you messages, you're right about data @gandalfPC!

i thought you might like to know I've created an online tool that turns the code into visuals, you can play with it here:
