Series in Limbo

I thought I'd start a thread for series that have not (to date) been finished. These aren't undelivered projects, just projects that had additional releases planned which never materialized.

- Apple (KS)

The Divine Comedy by Balthasar Epprecht
The first deck,
Inferno, commemorated the 700th anniversary of Dante Alighieri's work.
Purgatorio and
Paradiso were planned to follow it, with cards from all three decks forming a dodecaptych.
If only the originally planned diptych jokers had been produced (bottom center of attached image), this deck would feel complete on its own. Unfortunately, the two additional cards (top left) are clearly meant to be part of a larger layout.
I don't blame the creator for being ambitious. The landscape for collectable cards has definitely changed since Inferno shipped in 2022.

Absolutely no judgement implied. I know that geopolitical factors are preventing the parties from working together at this time. I care more about an end to war than I care about playing cards.

In a response to a comment on the campaign, Epprecht says the future decks are still planned. He recently completed an academic degree and is getting back to work on a project that was in line ahead of
Purgatorio.

I’ll have to dig around for the deck to check, but from my memory (and I am quite sure) Inferno had superior handling - liked that deck plenty

Would Orbit be suitable here? I know there are more than the original 12 decks if you're counting collabs and one offs, but the last in the line of Orbit decks I believe was 8 correct?

I am so looking forward to this series completing. Great thread, felicity.
Defunct seems to be a larger umbrella than what is being shared, which are incomplete series. Those can definitely hurt the soul more.

This isn't something I collect, so anyone who has information on an unfinished series is welcome to post here.

I think what I'm trying to get across are situations that are not resolved due to certain circumstances. If a creator comes out and says, officially, "This is the end, whatever I may have planned beyond this is not happening", then I don't see a place for it here. The projects I have cited are in a sort of limbo, conceived but not (yet) put into production.

Were there more promised?
This thread is for decks 'in limbo'
Otherwise all completed/old series could be considered defunct

Felicity, have you considered editing the thread to 'Series in Limbo'

I changed the name of the thread. I don't know if there is a way to propagate it to all of the posts.

Starting with V5, there was a flap inside the bottom of the tuckbox that when flipped up said 5 of 12. This went on for awhile with it in many of his decks. V7 had 7 of 12, V7.5 had 7.5 of 12. CC V1 had 7.75 of 12. The most recent deck to have this would be the 2021 Christmas Edition which was 8.75 of 12. From what I had read it was promised to have 12 editions of the main series, not counting the parallels, Christmas editions, or Cardistry Con editions. In all though, Orbit has I think 27 different editions if you count collabs and all decks released. Last I heard the company was a one man show in terms of production/distribution.

I have some of these decks. I cannot see any numbering inside the tuck - surely you do not have to deconstruct the tuck to see it

I used a thin pen to reach into the tuckbox and lift the inside flap up. Otherwise you would have to deconstruct the whole box.

I think it was on some random reddit thread. That or a Chris Ramsay review video. Orbit is one of if not my most favorite collections I have. It would be cool to see how the series would've ended up.

Has it been confirmed the series is over? My understanding is the main Orbit line involves a high print run so it would make sense to spread out releases over time.

Tomorrow is your 5 year anniversary - you have to get your posts up to 10 for the occasion

USPCC started what was announced to be a 10-deck series, something along the lines of "Bicycle Limited." They released the first two, and then completely revised their business model and that was the end of that. I don't have photos handy, but next time I stumble upon them, I'll grab a pic.

My own wish would be for two Goddesses to round out the series. But Artemis has the same weapon as her brother, Apollo, and I don't associate either Aphrodite or Hera with a weapon*. Hermes seems like the most likely choice, with his Staff/Caduceus as the motif. Ironically, though, the Caduceus is the symbol of diplomacy, and indicated a peaceful messenger.
* If any, Hera's weapon is said to be her tongue!

Unreleased: Litha & Mabon
There are now two problems for the remaining 2 decks for Wheel of the Year series:
- The war between Russia and Ukraine are still going on, and since Zhade Evgenia is in Russia... well, we do the math...
- Even IF the war didn't prevent Zhade Evgenia to work on the last two, the printer is the problem. Now that Cartamundi no longer doing custom decks: either... Jocu had to accept the imbalance and print the two with WJPC or any other printer.... OR.... Jocu try pleading with Cartamundi to have print the last two but the quality won't be as same as the rests of the decks within the series. It's the lesser of two evils.

WONDR Playing Cards by Pure Imaginations
Funded through Kickstarter since 2021, and judging from the comments on the campaign, it appears that Pure Imaginations had a problem in finishing the decks. The finished deck is surprisingly listed under "Cartelago" in
Paperdecks; suggesting... PI might get help from Franco Pascali.
There are 7 decks planned for this series:
- The Pyramids (Egypt)
- The Great Wall (China)
- Machu Picchu (Peru)
- Chicen Itza (Mexico)
- The Colloseum (Rome)
- Petra (Jordan)
- The Taj Mahal (India)
Only The Pyramids deck that sees the light. The rests, unfortunately, are lost in the dark abyss - as Pure Imaginations are no more...
One of the side of the tuck box is a grim reminder of a series that will never be finished
