Y.A.S.D. project

Hi!
Y.A.S.D. = Yet Another Standard Deck - there is also an alternative translation
It's a challenge:
I have to create my set of standard courts
Why? I need it badly! When I'll do it, I can say
"years in making"! That's why! Then I'll design a badge and start using it on all my decks. Don't you think it's cool to have something which is years in making? Good marketing. Lot's of followers. Satisfaction. Oh yes!
Let's finally do it! I can, and I have already started...

Try redrawing USPCC courts, no edits, to break you from your sever angular designs. Do same thing with other deck creators who have done standard tweaked courts. You need to "teach" your brain and creativity to learn something new stylistically.

The chance that I'll recolor USPCC standard courts is just 0.0001%. I don't like them at all. The goal is different, as I already know where this set will be used. At the same time, I'll be more than happy if my version of standard courts is not too standard.
I may also get rid of this idea and create a custom set instead

Chances - 70%

so it will be my 11th attempt. That's why it's a challenge!

Doing "master studies" is not a terrible idea, though, and that's essentially what Rich seems to be suggesting (correct me if I'm wrong). If you don't like USPCC's courts, don't copy 'em - pick the Paris pattern, or the standard courts Lotrek, Lorenzo or JR have developed. The idea isn't to teach yourself how to parrot their style; it's to pick up technical tips and tricks. In handwriting terms, it's less like learning how to forge a guy's signature and more like figuring out how he gets the curls on his lowercase G's to come out just right.

Yes. Get your drawing away from angular curves and imagine you're in art class and drawing human figures. I'm not saying stop your style but try another style.

Yeah, I too am having a hard time thinking of anything Montenzi does as anywhere close to a Standard Bicycle deck of courts and pips.....0.0001% is being generous.
Whatever "it" is, I'll be waiting.

Ok! I have finally started

so I'll post the very first sketch. I already tried using this head for UC2019 (found on the old deck), so I'll use it for this deck as a reference.
It will be something like this ... or completely different

I have no idea.

That is actually a whole lot more like a standard deck design than I ever thought I would see from Montenzi.

I like it. I'm curious, though, why you have this particular king pointing in the other direction from his traditional pose.

I was too lazy to redraw, but I wanted to check this direction first.

I will definitely try to make it as close to standard as possible. This deck will be a transformer, so I'll also create more custom courts based on this pattern. It's a plan.

Ok, I like the "more custom" approach better.

I sketched this King for the No.7 deck and updated it now. It's still a proof of concept.

Ok. I like what I have sketched so far! But I'll stop posting as it's now round #2, and I make a lot of changes. Then I'll start detailing and coloring. I'll post some close-to-final images soon.
Hopefully, I will find at least two hours per day

for this project. I am planning to finish in two weeks.

One more

It was a quick coloring study to understand how to convert sketches into the final graphics. It's something new to me as my usual workflow (and drawing style) is different. Also, I need this project to produce some very classic back designs! It will probably be the most exciting part of this process.

Ok. Queens are the most boring part of a standard deck. That's why I started from queens and then designed all other cards. It will be a custom deck.
I will give you an idea of how it looks now without posting other cards.
Colors, details, back designs: work in progress.

Nice colors and awesome design! Something with the eyes not right here. Also not a fan of the hair at the back of the head (a bow? Don't know what it looks like but seems out of place) in the semi-final (after) pic. The before pic doesn't have it (of course) and looks more cleaner. I like the hair on the forehead in the before pic compared to the after pic. Just my opinion and I understand everyone would have a different liking here. Not meant to be a negative comment at all.

I really like the "body" over the sketch but the head of the final. Not a fan of court heads that just seem pasted onto a complicated middle design (Kings Wild Maduro as an example).

Thanks for the comments!
I'll give you another idea. Ok. Don't look at heads/crowns, as I will finish them as soon as everything is ready.
I planned one classic back and one borderless, but it looks like there is no room for a classic back

I may have one more

The red back is not confirmed. Everything is work in progress!

BTW, as for a classic back, I have not even started!
But I found one sketch made for UC2019 No.7, so I used it to visualize ideas. IF and WHEN I produce this version with a classic back design, I'll be using this sketch as a starting point.

100% not in this project! <------------------------------ ok, 99%

Every single one of those backs is gold! Even your drafts are better than most people's final designs. I'm in awe.
