Collecting Style: Cardist, Tuckist or Semi-Tuckist???

I don't know if we have done this, or how to do this but I was wondering if we could do a survey on here. I was curious how many tuck openers (cardists?), tuckists (never open decks), and semi-tuckists( open some decks, but keep the majority sealed like me) we have here on UC. Can the moderators put something like this together? Or maybe just respond to this thread. Might be interesting.

I open all the things. #freethepip is a way of life and how I roll. Typically, I just buy one deck and let it breathe for the full experience.

This should be in the general forum not new and custom decks. But I open pretty much every deck I buy! Cards are meant to be enjoyed.

Open and handle every deck + aiming for one deck per deck (rarely duplicates and never over 2 of the same deck).

Btw, I think this thread should be moved to the General Discussions section?

I generally buy 2 or 3 decks. 1 to open, 1 to keep, (and where it makes sense) 1 to trade/sell etc. Not always possible though.

I've moved the topic to "General Discussion" and have left a shadow behind in the previous section for a little while so that people can easily find where this went.

I'm a semi-tuckist as well. I only open the decks that aren't super expensive. With exceptions of course

When i get 2 or more copies i usually open 1, keep 1 or 2, and other eventual copies to sell.
When i get only 1 copy, i always keep it closed

Thanks, I should have done that to begin with!

You are very much like me then. But it gets expensive buying 3 of each, hence this is why I am a semi-tuckist.

Simi-tuckist, with strong tuckist tendencies!

I was just now handling a gilded Luminosity, a 2019 No.7 Classic, and The Entertainer. Love those decks and have one or more of the same decks still safely in their tucks.

I was also checking out my GoG and GoB Oath decks from Lotrek in their original wrappers that will likely never be take out of their shipping wrapper, much less have the cards handled. There might be blank cards in there for all I know.

I buy multiples so that I can always open one.

TL:DR Skip to the end. It's hot out and I'm laying down some texty bits.

When Infinite Rule Luxury Playing Cards fulfill and my deck arrives. The first thing I'm going to do is set it down on a side table! A nice safe place. Then likely after the evening meal, I'm going to pop that tuck and free the QoH Pips so I can ask her just what that wonky weapon is she's clutching in her mits! What a day it will be when I figure it out too. I needs an upclose looksee with me own paws.

Some tucks I gotta pop. Some pips I gotta free. Others not so much. Every deck I've bought is for use. When I decide to use it. Sans some decks like Mavrick, Ace, Poker peeks, etc. I have some for shelf sitting although I do use Ace Blackjacks every now and again. I'll pop a pic of Ace BJ's in a collection post or something sometime. There's an "except these" rule for everything I think. "sure, you play with every card in the deck except these." Some use jokers some don't, no one uses the add card if it's in there, except, when it's the designated cut card, etc.

I'm not a cardist, me cardistry skill sucks terribads. I don't know what a tuckist is but I do know I'm not a tucker. Not part of that clan at all. I'm not a magician, my stable of illusions is only eight long. I used to play a little Poker. Now it's not a thing, friendly games are kaput. Just a collector, a lover of playing cards. :)

Been using casino decks a lot lately. ;)

Is the vast majority of my collection wrapped in cello? Course it is! Used to buy at least half a dozen if I was buyin. Pffft, singles, I'm not that smart! :x

I'm happy to open any deck* if I plan on keeping it, which is 95% of the decks I buy, but have only recently been doubling up on my favourites so that I can open one, keep one.

(*With the exception of my original Golden Oath; I don't know why, but I was scared to open it.)

This is fantastic to hear all of this. Thanks for running with my question. Its something I have been curious about in this particular group for a while. I love the fact that the #freethepips camp cringe when the #savetheseals camp DON'T open the decks, but it also seems to hold true vice versa. And I totally understand why. It's a beautiful dichotomy.

#freethepip. The whole reason I got into this weird expensive hobby is for the art. Jody Eklund's Titans, EPC's Pipmen World, E Jose's transformation decks were what go me sucked in.

I'm glad Lotrek made Crypt in such a way that even tuckists can open the boxes and still enjoy the decks without breaking any seal or cello. That deck is made to be opened and enjoyed for all types. If not, the tuckists will only have a plain, craft tuckbox to look at.

Although I would like to call my self a semi-tuckist, I just couldn't when less than 20% of all my decks are opened. The main reason I don't open the majority of my decks is that I'm too anal in getting my cards dirty/bent/chipped. This also apply to decks that I have more than 1 copy of. Somebody help me pleaseeeeee...

Confrontation therapy is the only thing that helps.
Rip a card of Bikes for the start. One day you'll be ready to do cardistry with Crypt 😅. Not that recommendad though, the foil around the indices gets easily scratched...
Always remember, "the last shirt doesn't have pockets"

I guess this answers the thread's topic as well for me. Not only openening but seriously (ab)using the cards.
My only non-opened decks are tuck swaps like the Gold edition Verum Videre and decks that I simply didn't had the time to play with, at the end of the day I only have two hands 🤷🏿‍♀️ and twenty-four hours.

Keep one, open one here. Unless it’s a super expensive deck or something like that! But also, sometimes I buy so many decks I don’t even get around to opening them for a few months lol. #firstworldproblems

Ah, thought I was the only one. That's the problem with using a shipping agent. All the new decks comes at once that you seldom have time to open them. Worse when the packages start stacking up. I've started bringing in 1 brick or package to work at a time. I open the decks slowly at the end of the day after I'm done with work. Slowly clearing up the backlog!

But it also helps me realize I picked up a lot of average or meh decks that I shouldn't have last year. Definitely a lot pickier and selective this year.

I'm in the camp of opening just about all the decks. I have a couple exceptions that I haven't been able to bring myself to crack open (Omnia Suprema will probably be the last one I crack), and I leave the limited versions sealed sometimes when there is a standard I own that has the exact same cards (like with Kings Wild Shorts). But for the most part... #freethepip

I usually try to buy 2 or 3 decks - one to open, second to keep and the third one to trade (as some of the others here). There will be two exceptions to this: (a) really rare decks (e.g., Lotrek's Standard GoG) - but I opened a GoB one; and (2) I do buy but not always open tuck swapped/recoloured decks (for example, KWP's decks - I would open a standard decks but keep the limited and gilded editions sealed).

I am a Cardist, simply a wolf who opens all of their cards and see the beauty of the cards. If I have duplicates of the same deck (if money allows), then I will keep the duplicates closed. I am always careful when opening the decks, such as retaining the cellophane wrapping it and rescuing the seals of the playing cards. That includes some of the gilded edition (which I don't know if I am regretting my decisions of doing it or not). In cases where the cards have multiple versions, if the changes between versions are somehow different - i.e. different court illustrations, different back designs, etc, then I would end up opening it. But, if the changes are just one small change, i.e. KWP decks with it's Standard, Limited, and Gilded (looking at you Jackson -3-), then simply open up the Standard and leave Limited and Gilded stay sealed! Opening your decks is based on your own judgement.

As long you are being careful with your collection, then there will be no harm. Card Cases exists for a reason - you may keep opened decks inside a carat case to protect it x3 (but carat cases also costs too I afraid ;3;)

At the end, you do you. You decide what you are going to do
