Resurrecting this thread because some great popcorn movies have just come out and are coming our way this year (and it's more fun to talk about than the current state of politics or economics.)

Seen recently:

Companion. VERY, VERY GOOD. Citizen Kane, this is not, but for a low budget thriller with light touches of sci-fi and horror (ish), it is absolutely at the top of it's class. As popcorn movies go, this is 5 out of 5. I definitely will be seeing this again, possibly while it's still in theaters.

Captain America: Brave New World. This one is better than I'd feared, and not as great as it's Cap predecessors. It's more grounded than some of the wacky recent Marvel outings that are full of sound and fury and signifying nothing; this one has personal stakes, decent plotting and pacing, and in many ways felt like it was made from the same mold as Winter Soldier and Civil War. Also, it follows up on some dangling threads from The Incredible Hulk (which I liked, even though it was not as great as Iron Man which came out the same year), leading some to call this just as much a sequel to Incredible Hulk as it is to the Falcon and Winter Soldier story lines. I re-watched Incredible Hulk before seeing this one in the theater, and that made for a fun double-header. I found this one to be solid; right in the middle tier of MCU movies. A few missed opportunities, and although I think Anthony Mackie is great and his character is written decently enough, the fact that they keep. on. brining. up. Steve Rogers does more to remind us of what we lost than to let Sam Wilson be his own dude. Harrison Ford is also great. As popcorn movies go, this is a 3.5 out of 5. I will watch this again in the future.

Coming up: Mission Impossible: Final Reckoning, Thunderbolts*, Fantastic Four, and TV series Reacher Season 3 and Daredevil: Born Again. I think there's a few more coming, too, I just don't... oh, right. Superman! And I'm sure there are others....

Agree with all of the above WRT Brave New World. I think the biggest disappointment for me was that the post-credits scene didn't have something more substantial, I would've thought that they'd want to start building some hype again.

Yeah, this one was a great popcorn movie while it was happening, and then stood up to examination afterwards. Liked it a lot, and I hope it's an indication of good things to come. Amazing was some good writing and some good acting can do, eh?

Oh, and Daredevil: Born Again was *quite* good. Note that it was filmed long before last year's US elections, and yet it touches upon themes that are remarkably relevant to today's headlines.

Planning to catch the Final Reckoning of Mission Impossible this coming weekend!
