Ok, I logged in again to check what’s going on. It looks like bots are requesting URLs like this one: /app.php/thankslist/givens/6508/.
BTW, there’s no actual content available for them since guests don’t have permission to access these URLs. Over 2 million requests were made to similar URLs within 24 hours.

HostGator is probably the worst hosting company on the planet — they’re sending 429 (Too Many Requests) errors without any valid reason.

I’ve posted some logs below, and you can clearly see that the peak request rate is maybe 10 per second. It's nothing! I’ve seen attacks with over 5,000 requests per second before on a nginx server, and everything ran fine. This is clearly a hosting issue — the 429 error is sent by the web server, and we cannot change those limits.

Looking at the thanklist pulls it seems they are far too “disguised” in IP and browser to not be a bad actor, and scanning thanklists like that would allow them to build up a picture of each user - which they no doubt try to match across systems to build up pictures that allow them to more effectively attempt to fish.

They may also be using a lurker account rather than being guest - we have plenty of accounts that get set up and not used I notice.

Not sure - I guess the “guest” user account usage is showing lots of bots there, but it still concerns me they may be managing to pull thanklists on mass and perhaps we can cut them off at the knees one way or another. Those can’t be good bots.

Do we have a way to see failed log in attempts? I am most concerned those bots are just trying to brute force passwords. It does seem to tell me that I have put in too many requests, when I am not doing so - rather than a more general message.

The server isn’t overloaded at all, but they apply their limits to everything — I can’t even run the ls -l command after logging in via SSH. That’s why I strongly believe the host needs to look into this, as their settings are completely off.

Ok. Once I’m able to do anything via SSH, I’ll change the hosting password to a new one (since I never actually knew it, but I can change) and try to log in to their hosting control panel (cPanel). There’s a chance their support is built in, and I’ll use it to request a fix for the issue.

I feel the same way - I've been getting the "Too Many Requests" an awful lot recently, that it is making the site almost unusable for me.

25000 guests online at 9am with a record 41k just a couple of days ago. Some kind of bot attack? This is all over my head, but I find it fascinating and impossible that there would be 25k people looking at this site at any given time.

But it seems to be this platforms problem
The harness forum I moderate has huge numbers of bots on - we set a record of 31,236 last week
BUT we have not had this Too Many Requests message at all
However we had no access for a weekend at about this date (with everybody getting the Forbidden message)
Admin only told me that it was server issues but we were back online on the Monday and we are not missing a beat no matter how many guests we have online

There is 30,000+ guests online right now (3pm LA time) and it takes a few refreshes to get anywhere

It's actually incredibly speedy. My hope is the bot issue was a temporary one.
