I totally agree with you that full foil and spot foil are very different. The craftsmanship of the Vs is incredible, but that still doesn't alter the fact that both full and spot foil with accurate registration even with multiple colors of foil is something that has been present in playing cards for years.

As for metallic inks the easily date back 100 years.

These are a beautiful example of metallic inks being used 134 years ago. You may find this Congress Deck and many others like it in The Hachmans as US6 No 606 c1881. Enough of this derailing topic from me. No reason for me to return to the ill named Thunderdome. Sinji7 and I have mended our wounds and moved on.

Nope, I am clear on the difference between "printed" cold pressed foil and that of hot pressed foil. Hot pressed foil with multi colors on playing cards has been around for years. I have a Federal 52 deck that has full bleed hot pressed foil on the back. Even if there is only 5 of them and I have them all doesn't mean that they or the tech don't exist.

As we are fond of saying "pictures, or it didn't happen". Simply impossible, USPCC does not now nor have they ever applied hot stamped foil to card backs.

There's a BIG difference between true modern metallic ink and what was used "over 100 years ago". For one thing, modern true metallic inks don't smear when handled.

(I could get in a long-winded discussion about the technical problems, primarily with particulates was solved, but it's a waste of time) Roland R&D did it in the late 70's. They perfected modern silver metallic ink, which came first. Enough said.

Since Donna and I just took my open deck of Venexiana Gold and shuffled them (she's a better handler than I am, primarily because my right wrist was crushed in 1999 in a plane landing and they fused the 9 pieces and locked my right wrist), stating that they can't be used to play cards is absurd. I had that deck open and with me at 52+Joker convention to show what was inside. Is it a good idea to play card games with them? Of course not, but this one deck was never sealed and intended for marketing purposes.

I am much less knowledgable about playing card history than any of the titans fighting here today, but I have always been under the impression that there are additional ways to impart metallic sheen to a deck beyond hot stamping, gilding, and metallic inks. For example, I first became aware of metallic shininess in cards when I picked up a few decks in the Soviet Union in 1988; they used gold leaf to achieve this effect. Is it possible that the Congress 606 posted above is using gold leaf instead of metallic inks?

As for hot stamping, I know that Gemaco has been using colored foil hot stamping on the backs of their cards for a couple decades now. My personal cards (these are the cards I hand out at conventions) are actually custom decks I had printed by Gemaco that have my name, e-mail address, and phone number foil stamped on the backs in silver, and I've had these for about 15 years. The party favors we handed out at our wedding in 1998 had green and gold foil hot stamping on the backs. Not a "full design" like what's been discussed here, but not a small portion of the backs, either.

Again, I'm a noob to the history of playing cards, and I find this conversation *fascinating*.

Like all the other ZEN Decks a pass for me. Would rather buy a Oriental deck.
Does anyone buys the prototype sales gimmick? i mean c´mon who prints so many prototypes.

On the same train, I didn't get the attraction of this deck from day one. I own a bunch of CA decks but this one didn't yank my chain.

I have to say that the tuck flap on the red "prototype" deck is a bit obnoxious. It's nearly a third the length of the box! That and my gold deck has an imperfection on one of the backs. However, the brick box was quite nice, and it definitely felt like a brick.
