I would love to see a SW Hanafuda set designed from scratch where each “month” was a planet setting w/ SW creatures in place of the animals and maybe lightsabers instead of ribbons. Crap, idle daydreaming is snowballing into obsession.

Kobana (小花) by Matsui Tengudo

High quality, handmade wrapped warped goodness - in bite size - a bit over 1/3 the standard size…

These are woodblock printed, hand colored using various screens - then a set of woodblock stamps is used to apply the silver - this deck is superior to more recent examples I have seen, probably tough for the old guy to work this small later on (they are really hideously tiny) - better wrapping, alignment, silver stamping - makes the new ones look messy.

Paid through the nose for this one, glad I did.


Such small sets were popular with Geisha - of so I’m told…

MPC delivered today - will get some pics up shortly - border worked out, though as expected slightly better alignment on the linen card stock, but the thicker tarot stock is still my preference and I figure that thicker borders will smooth things out a bit

Top two rows, smooth thick tarot stock, bottom row M31 linen - the texture on the linen is my guess for why it has better alignment, but thats just a guess - whatever the reason it does seem to be the case in my limited experience.

An even odder bird - this music CD / hanafuda deck / book thingy happened into my sights and I bagged it - wasn’t even sure it was a full set of cards, but as luck would have it - it is.

Sakuragawa by Oishi Tengudo

From the Hokuriku region. It is a reproduction of a very rare deck used before the war.

As one expects from a wood boxed Oishi deck, it is of the highest quality. Checks off another box in the Mekuri Koppu group (still a whopping 5 left to seek out in that group…)

Tengu by Nintendo, from around 1957 according to the tax stamp

Has a very nice feeling of age, small but appreciated warp (perhaps done by hand back then) - more than just a bit nicer than new Nintendo cards

Very nice quality PVC - colorful set from 2009 - unique take on the standard artwork, this one was a pleasant surprise - much superior to the other version I have seen out there (hanger box version by another company, shown at end of this post)

The I Nudi deck - an old deck from IndianWolf popped up on their site - from their first kickstarter, only 100 copies each of mini hanafuda and full size fusion decks made.

Not for everyone, and if you go by the first kickstarter backer count (23?) one might say it may be for almost no one, but I picked up a pair for the nostalgia of where IndianWolf started…

Actually, there’s a funny story behind the iNudi hanafuda set...

I (Jason) first encountered I modi in college (c. 2006) in Medieval and Renaissance Studies. We were all given a list of research topics to choose from. I quickly volunteered for what I thought was an ‘exotic’ research project. I thought it would be interesting to learn more about the importation of foreign art and architectural styles into Europe...

Turned out that ‘erotic’ and ‘exotic’ look awfully similar!!! (・・ ) ? (⊙_⊙) (O_O;) (⁄ ⁄•⁄_⁄•⁄ ⁄) I'm a quiet keep-to-myself kind of guy, so I sat there too stunned to backtrack on the public decision. Haha.

Antonietta, who was studying art history at the time, was amused by my folly and it planted some of the ideas that later lead to the creation of i Nudi.

At its core i Nudi was an artistic statement about censorship (both I modi and hanafuda were controlled substances in their day) and a cheeky tribute to Nintendo's humble beginnings in the playing card industry. What can we say, it seemed like a good idea at the time. lol. (^o^)

We now joke that iNudi was the underpainting for our Hanami decks, lol. Such beautiful decks with a dark secret. Haha. We essentially consider iNudi our hidden (and very rare) deck now. It's there so people can embarrass us with them when we’re famous. lol.

Fun fact for collectors: There are a few i Nudi signed copies out there too.

We have a real treat on this stop - spotted this deck on eBay and fought off a few less rabid bidders so we could find out whats inside…

Blumenkarten (flower cards) by Bratwurstkindchen

An odd German crowdfunded hanafuda deck based on various video games of old with rather excellent artwork I think you will agree.

eBay description:

“I backed this project around 2011-2012, for this product. It was an artist who was passionate about Japanese hanafuda cards and watercolor painting a set using all the famous Nintendo franchise characters, including Pokémon, Zelda, Mario and so forth. This was the first edition. And only edition ever made. It’s still sealed and includes 2 bonus cards from pre ordering. This was like a kickstarter but before kickstarter. I would venture less than 50 were made, and I have never seen another person who owns a set let alone heard of them. These were not cheap to buy and are extremely unknown but beautiful and mint new.”

Poker sized, with a standard early MPC style stock, not going to compete in the next cardistry competition but pretty decent and nothing to complain about.

I will add that the full bleed faces have amazingly accurate alignment, so who knows who made them…

The two extra cards come outside the sealed tuck, and replace the first two pine cards with a Pokémon themed set
