Pleased that our Silver Club deck for 2014 headed the list of Kardify's Top 12 new decks in 2014 http://www.kardify.com/2014/12/top-12-p ... m=facebook. A real honor for Jackson Robinson and the Expert Playing Card Co.

Re: 52 Plus Joker Silver Edition Deck
So it's a big deal if a couple of people liked it and were fortunate enough to get it? I don't think it's number 1 in too many people's lists, but congrats anyway.

Number 10 and 11 could've been 1 and 2.

+1. Looks like the list was compiled by a JR fanboi or that their main criteria was false rarity.jerichoholic wrote:I agree 100%!Bikefanatic wrote:Number 10 and 11 could've been 1 and 2.
And whle Seven Seas was nice, how did it beat out anything from UUSI, let alone the Origins decks? And where's Emmanuel Jose's decks? Did Sawdust and Clipped Wings not qualify somehow? Nothing from Chris O either? And id also nominate Connie Lim's Decked out cards for at least an honorable mention. They're definitely better than the Voltige deck which got such a shout out.
Sorry Kardify, you failed on this one.

Why not simply ask Tony how he came up with this list instead of jumping to conclusions.

Re: 52 Plus Joker Silver Edition Deck
At the end of the day, this is just a subjective list by one person's own opinion, and he should be entitled to it. Based upon Tony's posts here at UC, its clear he has a soft spot for Jackson (as well as he should since Jackson puts out good work). I doubt this list perfectly reflects anyone's top 12 list, it certainly doesn't come close to what my top 12 decks would be. Most of the decks he listed are all solid decks, but the 52 Plus Joker deck wouldn't even crack my top 20 list, plus it astounds me he wouldn't have any Uusi decks. But hey, its just one dude's subjective opinion, that's all.

Re: 52 Plus Joker Silver Edition Deck
You just can't leave Uusi off even a shorter list. That deck is unique, but I personally don't think it is instantly on any serious collector's list, much less many/most. I don't know if it would make the top 100? The UC2014 DotY is being fine tuned and will be announced soon. We're going to a new "top picker picks from the prizes", instead of fixed prizes. Vendor / artist / designers / reseller participation is solicited. Please get in touch, we will draw up a list of prizes soon, and some have already been in touch.Well lets see in this years Deck of the Year awards what decks come up top, given a larger number of opinions i would say it would be more representative =)...Based upon Tony's posts here at UC, its clear he has a soft spot for Jackson (as well as he should since Jackson puts out good work). That's why I have to disagree with you. The 52+ Joker was a shoe in for 1st. I was there. It is the best tuck box and cards of 2014. YOu might consider "Run", but the 52+ Joker deck has all the bells and whistles for any tuck box for 2014. I caught the light. Re: 52 Plus Joker Silver Edition Deck
I love this conversation about favorite decks from the past year; I'm going to create a separate thread. And, then I'm going to post my opinions about the Silver 52 here, which I broke into earlier than I had planned because of the discussion here.
I hope nobody objects to me siphoning off Bama's post into a new thread.
-------------
Back on topic:
Like many who have commented on this deck, I was not entirely chomping at the proverbial bit given what I saw of the back design, but as I've stated elsewhere, I'm a sucker for shiny. The promise of foil and metallic inks, plus trusting Jackson's design sensibilities and Bill K's understanding of the mechanics of the cards, was enough to encourage me to see what all the fuss was about. I still have yet to watch the 20 minute presentation that is linked to several times above; I'll likely do so soon. But, I ordered the club deck, and received them fairly recently. I'm one of those collectors who orders "one for the collection," and then one or more to actually open and enjoy. I tend not to necessarily open expensive decks right away, but I do open them. I opened this one sooner than I might have given all the discussion here about whether these deserved to be considered among the year's best.
So.
The backs are surprisingly appealing in person. While I am not generally a fan of the scripty style that Jackson used here, it's put to really good effect with the combination of ink and foil. The hot stamping process also leaves an interesting effect on the other side of the card -- I don't know if it's intentional, and I acknowledge that it's kind of odd to have a reverse of the card back showing through when the design features non-palindromic numbers, but I still find the effect oddly appealing. In this way, the scripty-ness of the back design works really well given the hints it presents on the face side.
On the court cards, the use of color is very well done, and the registration is perfect. Speaking as someone who has worked in the printing industry, I am surprised and impressed at how well everything lines up. On top of that, the metallic inks genuinely have a metallic sheen, which is not always the case with metallic inks. The silver and blue work very well together.
I am increasingly preferring the EPCC/LPCC card stock and finish over USPCC, albeit only just slightly. I realize that everyone on the forums here has different tastes and preferences in this matter, and a lot of it comes down to what you do with your cards. I like to actually play games with the cards, although every once in a while I like to try my hand at a little magic or a little cardistry. Other than that, though, for my collector decks, it's about the combination of art and materials that really draw my attention. These EPCC decks have the advantage of truly metallic-looking metallic inks, perfect registration, colors that pop, stiff card stock with just the right amount of snap, and durability to hold up against reasonable card play.
The box is interesting; Very solid, very protective of the cards contained therein, but I also find it just a wee bit clunky and cumbersome. I wasn't sure the best way to open the club edition with regard to the serial number seal; I opted to try peeling it, which worked fine on the outer box but then the seal ripped (despite me being very careful) right in the middle of the number on the bottom (i.e., the inner box). I should have just cut the seal at the seams and let it go at that. So, yeah, I messed that up pretty good.
Also, since this style of card case doesn't hold the cards as tightly as a typical tuck, the cards aren't forced back into conformity with each other; they're stored more loosey-goosey. This isn't a deal breaker, by any means, but now that I've just received the gold edition of this deck, I'll likely play more with that for the time being out of concern for allowing slight bends to start differentiating the silver edition cards.
All-in-all, I enjoy this deck, and while I haven't compiled my personal "best of 2014" list yet, this will make my list at the very least as an honorable mention, and possibly in the top ten (although probably not in my top three.) This is a worthy add to my collection, as is its golden counterpart.
I hope nobody objects to me siphoning off Bama's post into a new thread.

I opted to peel as well but I didn't completely remove it, just peeled it off the outer case. I did have some of the foil come up with the sticker which was disappointing but isn't noticeable until you get up close.

How different are the 52 Plus Joker Silver Edition deck court cards compared to the KW Tally-Ho court cards? Are they all completely different or just recolored?

I hadn't thought of that.TGunitedcardists wrote:How different are the 52 Plus Joker Silver Edition deck court cards compared to the KW Tally-Ho court cards? Are they all completely different or just recolored?
Spot checking just a couple of the courts, I see that the courts in the 52 Plus club deck are, in fact, recolors of the KW Tallys. I hadn't noticed the similarities because, frankly, the 52 Plus deck courts seem to work so much better.
The size of the court illustrations is the same in both decks. The Indices are the same font, but both the indices and the pips are larger in the 52 Plus deck (this is true for the number cards as well as the courts). Both sizes work well, and the indices are nice and close to the corner edges in both cases.
I far prefer the color scheme of the 52 Plus deck, in order: Silver club deck, Gold deck, KW Tally. But, then again, I've noted that my preference is for shiny.

Re: 52 Plus Joker Silver Edition Deck
I never speak out on anything. But, the 52+Joker deck. They could not give them away at their Convention. Sold maybe hundred. Stuck with the rest. That list is a dawned insult to every real artist that put out a deck last year. I could list a hundred decks better than this. Sorry Tom. But just enough of the total Bull Crab. The list is a joke. Jackson in comparison to say Randy Butterfield, Lotrek, Lorenzo, Chin, Uusi etc etc IS A MEDIOCRE ARTIST. FOR CHRISTSAKE LOOK AT THE ARTISTRY FOLKS. O...K then.
I think it's worth it to emphasize that it's THEIR list. Literally anyone else's opinion is irrelevant. I'm sure you have your list and many will disagree with some or all of them. Same for what constitutes my favorites as well as everyone else's.

Re: 52 Plus Joker Silver Edition Deck
Unfortunately, often times people have ulterior motives and hidden agendas when promoting things as well. All this hype over the 52+ Joker deck (which in my opinion is a very mediocre deck) is one of those instances perhaps, and some people are just drinking the Kool Aid. Tom is an experienced collector and extremely knowledgeable about cards. If you put a gun to his head, I really doubt he would seriously and objectively place the 52+ deck at the top of his list as the absolute best deck of 2014 (which was one of the most prolific years as far as the volume of quality cards being produced), but he has a vested interest in promoting/hyping up this deck (probably because they printed a large quantity of the Silver and Gold decks and need to sell them off). Plus, as the host of the Convention, I have no doubt you have inside info and tangible evidence of things that further cements your opinion of this deck.Donna Romine wrote:I never speak out on anything. But, the 52+Joker deck. They could not give them away at their Convention. Sold maybe hundred. Stuck with the rest. That list is a dawned insult to every real artist that put out a deck last year. You may, however, have gone a bit overboard as far as your rating Jackson as an artist, and this is coming from someone who has very publically butted heads with Jackson on this forum and I'm not much of a fan of his and I'm sure the feeling is mutual. Of course art is subjective, but even with that qualifier, I don't know that he's that far behind Uusi, Chin, Lorenzo, Lotrek, Randy, etc. I think where Jackson really excels is making blinged out, pretty tuck boxes. He could put toilet paper inside and I think some people will still buy it because the tucks are so nice. But its your opinion, which you are entitled to have, just like Tom is entitled to his opinions of the best decks of 2014, so I can respect that.
Clearly the 52+ deck isn't Jackson's best work. In fact, it really wouldn't surprise me at all if it came out that he spent just two days whipping up that boring back design and slapping re-colored KW Tally courts onto the cards to crank out a deck for Tom on super short notice.

I have to disagree about they not being able to give them away at the convention b/c they did put a limit of 3 per member at the convention. Granted many only bought 1, there were several that did buy 3. As far as stating that there are a hundred decks better than this, that subjective to what you prefer. Please remember that this list is one of many and to call it a joke is very disrespectful. I have a good idea why you may have hard feelings against Jackson, at least it appears you do.

Re: 52 Plus Joker Silver Edition Deck
I have to disagree. This deck had all the bells and whistles on the cards (2 metallic inks) and them some on the tuck. You have to admit this is not a normal tuck. I bought 3, gave out 1 so far. I guess you can't appreciate what you don't have. It's limited to 500... I do have to admit Uusi should have been in there somewhere...sinjin7 wrote: Unfortunately, often times people have ulterior motives and hidden agendas when promoting things as well. Re: 52 Plus Joker Silver Edition Deck
Having bells and whistles & limited to XXX no. of cards doesnt instantly equate to a great deck. Instead its the other way around, having bells and whistles to support and make a great deck better. You dont throw gold on poop and say the poop is the best thing in the world right?sprouts1115 wrote:I have to disagree. But I clearly dont agree with Donna on how far jackson is behind the various named artists. However this 52j deck clearly isnt his best work, that back design while fitting with the club isnt nearly as inspiring as fed 52. Using his recoloured standard courts arguably isnt a good thing, but still better than standard courts. Jackson isnt lagging behind as an artist, but rather this deck isnt a good representation of what he is capable of. I would agree w sinjin that he probably pumped this deck out in a week or so at Tom's request.
As far as lists go, only the person writing the list knows whether favours were pulled to alter his list, perhaps a personal preference played a large part (well you cant fault me for putting lorenzo & lotreks work at the top, even though they are good friends). Or maybe kardify really likes the deck, who knows !? Im not going into speculation of what is really going on behind the scenes since its not my place to do so.

I can't say the cards weren't hurried but the tuck was definitely not hurried. No way that you could come up with that design and detail in just one week.

Re: 52 Plus Joker Silver Edition Deck
Lordy! We need to stop making assumptions. If I made my own list, it's clearly going to be different from everyone else's - nobody has the same tastes, much less their hands on every single deck made last year.
Will the UC DotY be different? Of course it will. Is Jackson's work good stuff, even if some of us don't think his tactics are? This particular deck might be the exception to that, being "thrown together while cooking pasta one night for the family" as someone put it in a PM, but for the most part - it IS that exception. Do I agree with how everyone conducts their business? I don't think any of us do.
The tuck was hand made, assembled and specifically intended to appeal to the 52+J target demographic.
Sinjin hit the nail on several heads, as always. Calm down folks, everyone is entitled to their opinion.
