Mount Olympus Deck (KS)

Unread post by RandyButterfield »

Hey Everyone,

I’m proud to post about my newest fully-custom design, the Mount Olympus Deck! I drew all of the characters, monsters and Mount Olympus in pencil on paper, and painted in coloring in Photoshop. It will be a Legends printing, of course. My plan is a February Kickstarter launch.

Hades is not a god of Mount Olympus, but I just had to include him in the Deck (and most people wouldn’t even realize that he’s not).

Thanks, Randy

Nice cards Randy but a couple of thoughts.

As well as having the names for the courts, most of them break their border and thereby reduce the white space. This is not the case for the number cards and therefore there is a lot of white space.
I would like to see what no borders and full background might look like
Or maybe a border like the card backs and with the index inside the border too

Mount Olympus is the standout of the Aces and I would like to see all the other Aces bigger - breaking their borders
KoD - my initials, no wonder I grew up a lover of playing cards

Well, let’s start with the Indices, as they’re the most important elements for a playable Deck (which is always high on my priorities for a design). If I take the border out to the edges and have the Indices inside the border, that would make it an unplayable Deck. The indices would be too far from the corners to allow for proper playability. So the border is locked in size and location.

If I removed the border completely, that loses the Greek pattern and “sky” background colors I have in the design. Then it’s just a boring white design with courts and aces as large as possible. I’m not doing that either. It’s too plain. The Greek border in the Face Cards ties in nicely with the Back and Tuck Box.

I purposely kept Cyclops, Medusa, and the Colchian Dragon at the smaller scale so I could highlight them in full-body poses AND to keep them from overtaking the large PIPs within the design. For example, I could have a big Cyclops in the Ace of Hearts that overlaps the border, but then there would be no point to include the large Heart that would be completely covered up by the large Cyclops. That’s not what I had in mind for this design.

Thanks, Randy

Holy cow, I had better go to SpecSavers - you would be right about a large cyclops covering the heart for as it is, I am not sure I noticed the large heart on my first viewing
Maybe the impression I got of too much white space is accentuated by the fact that they are shown on a white page.
Yeah, I overlooked playability in regards to huge borders
With no borders, I said full background as in all "sky"

ps The Court transitions are fantastic

Love these, Randy! I'd selfishly love a version with your Medusa back.

Thanks Honeybee!

I don’t usually like doing the court transitions without a divider of some kind, but I thought what the hell for this one. It makes you plan the drawings differently than you would for a transition with a divider element.

I have a MPC Protodeck from when I was almost halfway finished with the Deck. I always do this to see how the designs look at actual size, and to make sure colors were reading good. Definitely no problem with extra white space. I’m very happy with how they turned out!

Legends is working on Tuck prototypes now, and I’ll order some full MPC Protodecks soon. The plan is a photoshoot in January.

Thanks, Randy

Thank you!

I actually thought about using a variation of the Medusa Back at the beginning, but I figured would thing I was being lazy. If it gets over 400 Backers, maybe I’ll do an extra Deck with the Medusa Back in colors to go with this design (and roughened up to change the lineart style to a more pencil drawing style, if I can).

I’ve been thinking about it today, after I saw your post. Sherman and Jamie were showing me a bunch of Mini Decks at 52 Joker a couple months ago. A Medusa Back variation for Mount Olympus could be a pretty sweet Mini Deck! I’ll continue to think on it.

When Mike and I launched the Medusa Deck, I designed a Tuck Box, Back Card, Courts, Jokers, Aces and a few Numbers Cards for a Medusa RUINS Deck. The plan was a surprise release if we hit over 400 Backers. The project only made it up to 323 Backers, so it never came to fruition. Oh well.

Thanks, Randy

Since I have some time off for the holidays, I spent a lot of time playing around with a Mini Deck design and Render. I ended up making the Tuck front look like it’s Athena’s shield with Medusa’s head, to tie it in with the Mount Olympus aspect.

I kept the snakes green, but gave the green a tint similar to the Mount Olympus’ Back Card green elements. And the orange from the original Medusa Back is now a light gold color, to also tie in with the Mount Olympus Back Card. I added some subtle texture as well.

Below is a Render and a side-by-side graphic to highlight the size differences. The Mini Deck would only happen if the project hits 400 Backers, and it would print with MPC (in case I need to do small quantities and so it doesn’t slow down the Legends print run of the main Deck).

Thanks, Randy
