Happy 10th National Playing Card Collection Day

Unread post by kevork »

While I understand NPCCD has left a bad taste in a lot of people’s mouths, this year marks the 10th anniversary of the holiday that began on October 17th, 2016. Whatever your feelings may be about how things unfolded, it is worth remembering that at its core, NPCCD was meant to celebrate what brings us together: our shared love of playing cards and the art & stories behind them.

Over the past decade, the playing card world has changed dramatically. What were once groundbreaking features (custom tucks, premium foils, innovative stock and finish combinations), have now become normalized and expected. This evolution has elevated the overall quality and creativity of modern decks, benefiting collectors, artists, and printers alike. Kickstarter allowed many to find the fans to support their artwork and multiple Patreons soon followed.

There have been moments when people have said the market is in decline, but that often reflects the state of the world more than the state of the hobby itself. The passion for playing cards remains strong. We now have the luxury of having a backlog of wonderful creations, which allows collectors to focus more on the decks that truly belong in their collections. Those who are passionate have remained, and the growing number of newcomers attending the 52+J Convention each year is another sign that the community is very much alive and well.

The person who created the holiday and the yearly deck series may no longer be active, and the later chapters of that story remain unfinished. But perhaps this anniversary can serve as an invitation not to dwell on what was lost, but to honor what has endured.

Here’s to ten years of collecting, trading, designing, learning, and connecting through something as simple and as extraordinary as a deck of cards.

Feel free to respond here with whatever thoughts, reflections, observations you may have throughout your time collecting. :)

Thanks for a reminder of NPCCD. I remember going all in for five pairs of the 2017 decks so I could try to get all five of the pearl deck variants (not knowing their was a sixth sold at the Convention - oh well). I remember messaging Alex and him making sure I was able to get a full set. It was a great set and still fairly early in my playing card collection adventure, but gearing up fast. That was a notable purchase at the time.

In looking back through Kickstarter, I started collecting almost 9 years to the day with Lorenzo's Gemini campaign. So far I have backed 626 successful Kickstarter campaigns. Just before my 2017 NPCCD purchase I joined United Cardists community as it was an early source of information on Lotrek stuff, even launching some of his early creations outside of Kickstarter.

I feel a lot calmer as a collector these days. I still get excited for new stuff. Maybe not as excited, but still there. I feel the year has been a bit quiet overall, but recently it has picked up with recent and ongoing Kickstarter campaigns including Johnny Appleseed (received), Dualism Chroma, Odd Fellows - From the Sanctuary, The Parlour Royale (which are already in hand), Circus Corinthia - The Grand Finale (in for a hard box brick again), Patternwork - Limited-Edition Hand-drawn Art Playing Cards (in for more than I will admit to myself), Vengeance of Witches: 2nd Edition (just a pair and booklet), Wallace (four deck set. I am not as active with KWP as I used to be, but still enjoy Jackson's work), Litha & Mabon by Jocu (I have missed Jocu's absence recently). So how many playing card projects for me recently? 9 projects and a ton of decks and stuff! I wouldn't say the custom playing card market is dead yet for me at least.

Thanks for the opportunity to pause and reflect. I joined Kickstarter in Nov 2011, and I backed my first playing card campaign in 2015: Thirdway Industries' Omnia. Ten years as a playing card collector...not a long time in the totality of my life, but a significant period nonetheless.

Kickstarter tells me I've backed 382 campaigns to date, and 312 in the Games category. That includes projects that are not yet fulfilled, a handful that never delivered, and a few that didn't reach their goal.

My activity certainly ramped up during the pandemic, and has ebbed as I became more selective over time. My favorite creators are still creating, for the most part, and that's encouraging for my spirit if not my wallet. :D
