Non-Card Collections (Trigger Warning: Not Tuck Boxes)

Off-topic randomness, anything goes. Keep it PG-13.

Non-Card Collections (Trigger Warning: Not Tuck Boxes)

Unread post by cardeckatcher »

Hey everyone,

Curious: What other stuff do you all collect besides playing cards? Or are we all strictly monogamous with our tucks?

Personally, I’ve got a trove of Bob Ross memorabilia. We’re talking the whole spectrum.. talking plushies, limited edition Funko Pops, paint-by-numbers kits, and yes, even the elusive “Joy of Painting” VHS box set. Truly the happy little crown jewel trees of my non deck hoarding.

Anyway, thought this might be a fun thread to learn more about everyone’s side obsessions.... assuming, of course, that asking people what they collect in the Off-Topic/General section isn’t somehow too off-topic. And fingers crossed the title doesn’t trigger a citation from the "Ministry of Thread Naming Precision".

Share your collections! Coins? Comics? Antique spoons? Weird taxidermy? Let’s hear it!

I thought you appreciated the nudge about dropping the clickbait - it doesn't sound like it.
I understand that you see your role is to reinvigorate the UC forum
We can no doubt do with some.
I do however much prefer UC to Reddit because it is better organized and more informative.

I used to be a bit of a book collector but have curtailed that as I cannot afford too many expensive hobbies.
I like beautiful books and had many children's books by top illustrators (but the fires got them and I have only replaced some)
I used to be 'vulnerable' to collecting other artworks too so overall I would say my interests fall under the heading of Art & Design
Just like my recent fascination with covers from The New Yorker.

Hey Honey,

It was a joke, you know, those extinct little creatures that used to roam forums freely before they got hunted down by the Seriousness Patrol. I’m well aware of the state of UC: bone-dry, tumbleweeds, and ghost decks echoing in the void and believe me.. I can now see why (also a joke).

If I let a bit of your and Gandolf’s gentle policing kill my vibe, I’d be a true loser… and that ain’t my deck style. 😎

But seriously, I respect your passion for Art & Design. New Yorker covers are a solid aesthetic rabbit hole. Just don’t let the joy police confiscate your sense of humor too (another joke).

Catch you in the shuffle

Hey man (that is so not me LOL) nobody wants to kill your vibe
It will be refreshing - flowery it up but try to include the topic somewhere in the subject because it really is useful

This is in general, I don't see a problem with such a thread here personally. Actually helps to get to know one another more. Always free to not open or ignore.

I collect a few other things;

Playing card related shirts (I have probably 60+, I stopped counting)
Other playing card related things such as advertisements, cushions, cheese knives and general ephermia)
Non-numismatic coins, in particluar card protectors
Books about gambling (hmm, sensing a theme here)
Whisky (mostly Scotch, but Irish, Japanese and English whiskeys are all nice as well)

The last on my list is hard to keep growing, for some reason it just seems to disappear, especially in the evenings!

Will do. Appreciate it like a card spring into the void. 🫠🃏

Mad respect because the whiskey may vanish, but the commitment to collecting? Legendary.

Well, it's complicated. I always just look for something old an special that catches my eye. I'm regularly thriving through flea markets and garage sales. I'm not bound to any strict categories, it goes from old postcards to old wooden boxes of any kind and doesn't end with old books. I also look out for things in need of restoration to restore them myself. This way, I can often save a pretty penny and save things from the trash.

The banter over the original post title seems to have been the only issue - and I believe reference to my policing was in regard to a note upon reviving a dead thread while letting them know the user they were thanking hadn’t been around in years - didn’t mean to harsh a buzz (or did I commit more serious grievance?)

It used to be common knowledge (probably isn't anymore, since forum usage in general isn't what it once was) that bumping an old thread without any new relevant information was frowned upon. Times have changed and left some of us feeling like Abe Simpson.

Thank you, fellow seeker of the extraordinary! It’s an honor to join the halls of the United Cardists where cardboard isn't just stock but also story.

With reticence I offer from the shadowy fringes of the collector realm: Whispers of rarity, signals of saturation, and artifacts that flicker between myth and market.

You’ll be seeing more of cardeckatcher soon.. my endeavor is to chart the elusive, rank the revered, and unmask the unicorns among us. Until then, keep your tucks tight and your hearts wild..

The hunt is only just beginning!

I would love to see some examples from your collection. I hear they can get quite luxurious and expensive.

This is the first collection of its kind I've ever seen. Do you just collect what you like or do you stick to certain themes?

Mostly what I like, but you can see themes as I have purchased repeatedly from the same people; for example, the Lord of the Rings in the lower centre from The Grumpy Unicorn, and the Apple section in the lower right from Glitchbits.

I am a lot more restrained than I ever was during my playing card collecting height.

Aside from playing cards and minis, I love to collect coins and antique skeleton keys. While half of my coin collection is related to previous card campaigns, the other half is a mix of various dealer buttons and EDC coins with deep relief to their designs. I love ornate skeleton keys that are vintage, rather than "vintage style" which means something new made to look old.

I have for a while collected card cover coins, mostly those associated directly with playing card projects, but also a few "Hobo" coins.

I used to collect tons and tons of books. But with changes in my financial fortunes, I've only continue to collect Stephen King first editions in hardback and mass market paperback as they come out. Sometimes I even read them! :-)

Great topic!

And I love, love, love the tagline "UC member since 2025."

Its funny you shared about collecting books because I mentioned in a post a few weeks ago that I studied literature so I have a large book collection by de facto. British literature and Greek mythology are by far my favorite topics.

Yeah so I grew up in the 90's and early 00's so when I was a kid I found a book in the library about card tricks but it was really about sleight of hand I think everyone knows it: The Expert at the Card Table. It was challenging for me to read when I first discovered it but kept coming back and learned some stuff. Then the Dan and Dave videos a couple years after and that was it man. Many frustrating hours and Rider Back decks later, now pushing 40, I discovered this forum very very recently.. I had no idea.
