Matchbox Label Art Playing Cards by Chet Phillips

Whimsical Etsy deck. I thought the film references are kinda funny. Not going to get it though. If someone is interested click here.

Damn this one is so fine I really wished it had options to ship to UK...

Edit:
Just found out that there is a standard tuck edition with the same plastic coated cards that ships internationally

I really wish they didn't put full art on the number cards. I might have to get these regardless of that design flaw.

Great find. I will go for it and report back. The art is fantastic and I dig the box. We'll see how well it handles, but I am not too worried about that part. Thanks for sharing!

Personally, I love the full art on the number cards - makes it feel more like a fully custom deck.

I love the look of this deck - just personal taste, I realize - and pity this wasn't crowdfunded for a larger audience. I could see a project like this having quite a broad appeal.

I have had my deck for a couple of weeks and I think it really is excellent. 58 cards of the custom art with some great film and literature references. It handles very well, despite the mystery printer! I highly recommend this one

The artwork on these does really look incredible - based on the pictures.

It's a rather steep price though.

The limited set that has a tuckbox like a matchbox is 35, but the standard version is available for 15 plus shipping. He also has 2 other decks that he designed with more amazing artwork, you should check them out. :D

If you scroll down past the comments, there are picture boxes of other items available for sale on Chet's etsy site and the other decks are listed. Unfortunately, the Steampunk deck was down to its last few and I think that they are now sold out as the picture box is no longer available. Here's the links to the standard matchbox deck and Army of Strange Beasts.

Thank you! All things considered they aren't too bad. They are plastic coated like the Steam Ark deck, but the coating seems thinner. Think fancy Aviators. They handle decently for basic card work, but I wouldn't use them for cardistry or manipulation, as like Aviators, they just dont have a tactile feel that I like or am used to. Its a good quality stock and they do have a nice snap to them without being too stiff or overly easy to bend like many plastic coated decks are.

After taking a second look at them, from a printer perspective, it makes me wonder if the stock and finish were chosen using the same method you would use for choosing to print a photo on matte paper or gloss. In this case, I would say they were designed for the art, with function taking a back seat. Tbh, I think they are worth it for that alone. I hope he does more decks, as I am fast becoming a big fan of his style.

Not only is his art spectacular, but he was specific in choosing the art for each rank. So A through K each has its own mini-theme. Blows me away!

I'm very pleased to hear that this deck is now available again.

Here's a comparison between the old cover and the new cover.

Image

And here is how the card backs have changed.

Image

Do we have any more information about which were the 19 cards that have been changed out with different cards, and why?

The cards below from the first issued do not appear in the new issue. Some others have been moved around, e.g. the 2C is now the 10D.

Licensing issues, clearly. Toho and Ghibli among others. But Audrey 2 and the MST3K bots are making it awfully enticing.

Not sure if he runs into licensing issue - I think they give that type of art a wide berth (parody)

I shot him a message - we shall see what grief if any the lawyers gave him ;)

I want to like these decks, I really do. The art style of the matchbox covers is super cool. But they way they have been implemented into the deck just remind me of a souvenier deck (and the images seems cropped super close to the indicies as well). Ah well.

I don’t know if he thought of that - or perhaps he wanted to keep those strong draws in the first deck for those that bought that version - not going to ask him that ;)

I am a big enough fan of enough of the things in there - and the new stuff - chet can do little wrong by me
