Well, if someone can just take the best elements of both of these decks and make a third one (borderless two-way back, decent court customization etc) that'd be great

Decent customization of court cards: I can think off... the people who died in the hotel, and the main characters of the Shining!MagikFingerz wrote: βSat Dec 26, 2020 3:48 pm Well, if someone can just take the best elements of both of these decks and make a third one (borderless two-way back, decent court customization etc) that'd be great![]()
Also, how bout two versions of Overloom Deck, like one represents the still standing hotel in the Shining and the abandoned hotel in Doctor Sleep

Re: The Shining themed decks
What's that saying? Three is a charm?
Penguin magic teased a Shining themed deck in this year's April.
Seems like the 40th anniversary of the movie inspired quite some fellows.

The Penguin deck looks the best out of them so far, just hope the courts are custom

Seeing the 9 of Diamonds being standard font and placement I kinda doubt that. Fingers crossed for a pleasant surprise.

Since I'm assuming a license wasn't obtained I would expect the courts to be standard. What else could they be if not movie characters?

Re: Overlook Playing Cards (The Shining) / AoP Mystery Deck
I'm not sure the characters are even recognizable (or numerous) enough to add much to a court. I do think it would benefit from more of a redrawn standard court to elevate the design a bit, but full custom courts I don't think would work well for this deck.

Re: Overlook Playing Cards (The Shining) / AoP Mystery Deck
I agree. And as much as I'd like to see any sort of court customization, I just don't think Penguin would do it. If anything I'd expect to see that rug pattern sprinkled throughout.KingfisherZero wrote: βTue Dec 29, 2020 10:16 amI'm not sure the characters are even recognizable (or numerous) enough to add much to a court. Re: Overlook Playing Cards (The Shining) / AoP Mystery Deck
I can shed some light on the Penguin ones, since I designed the back & faces. One of our in-house artists designed the tuck.
I'd wanted to do a Shining-themed deck since 2009 when I saw a magician using the carpet pattern for his close-up pad.
I mocked up the back design (I also agree it's the best of the various offerings but I'm biased) awhile back, and then we put together the rest of the deck at the beginning of the year.
Our intent was to run the deck in 2020. When I first posted the IG tease, I was contacted by Unknown Cards and accused of stealing their idea. We cleared it up pretty quickly that it was a case of independent creation, and not a theft. Side note to all deck creators out there - lots of people have similar ideas in the magic & card worlds. If someone creates something similar to your project, I can pretty much guarantee there's a 99.9% chance that it's a coincidence. Drives me crazy when peoples first reaction is "You stole this!".
Anyway, fast forward, and we find out that a French magician had produced a Shining-themed deck called R237 several years ago. He claimed to be working on a 2nd edition that he would be launching on KS this year.
We offered to collaborate with him on the project, which he accepted, and then communication basically stopped.
Now with so many other iterations being available, I think it's unlikely that Penguin will move forward with ours. At the time we developed it, we were not aware of any other versions using this iconic pattern for the back design.
While I think our back design is the best execution, we're also not that interested in making a deck where there are already 3+ variations on the market. We have lots of fun & cool new designs that we'll be launching in 2021.
Additionally, there is an official Stephen King store on Zazzle that offers a Room 217 (the room in the book is different from the movie) deck. So if anyone can lay claim to being an "official" deck, I guess it's that one.

Thanks for that info, Kevin. Sad news, I would have totally bought yours. The others are lacking in too many areas. I can understand your rationale for not wanting to produce this at the moment, though.

I think borderless is best for this design and I think the PM is pretty nice. Don't know anything about the Shining or Overlook though but that's ok.

Definitely like the Penguin version the best and its disappointing to hear that you won't be moving forward with it as I would have bought a bunch for sure!

My disappointment upon pulling off the seal and finding the underside blank was palpable. wonder if they finally decided to make use of that space in the new one - doubt it, but dang it, I wonderβ¦
