SOVEREIGN Exquisite Playing Cards (Jody Eklund)

Unread post by jodyeklund »

Hey everyone!

I hope you are all enjoying your Luminosity decks. I am launching a new project in January and need some feedback on the project. So, don't hesitate to give me your thoughts.

These are VERY cool! I know you just did copper, but that blue would look sick with copper foil. Everything I can see looks incredible though.

Perhaps pips on the number cards that are more inline with the pips on the courts?

Are the card backs foiled or metallic inks?

I have one of the copper gilded Luminosity decks opened. The copper gilding is insane. Almost as insane as Jody's amazing artwork design for that deck.

From what I can see of his new Sovereign deck, Jody is just taking up a notch. Well done Jody. My bank hates you, but don't listen to the haters  I would love to see this in cold foil, but cold foil, metallic ink, standard printing, I'll be ready to part with my money to get some. BTW, the Joker shown is awesome.

Yes the joker is awesome. As far as I can zoom in on my phone, it looks like the joke has only 3 fingers on top of the cards? This would give her 4 fingers total. Is it just too small for me to see?

Oh, W-O-W!

Those tucks!

The courts, the pips, the classic-revamped AoS...

Well, I won't have to pay for the KWJ subscriptions again until February and the only KS pending project I've pledged for is Charmers, so I may be able to spend some money on this project. Looking forward to it!

Damn it, Jody! Good thing my paychecks are getting slightly bigger, these look like a must-have. Really hoping they'll be foiled!

Need more details before proper feedback can be given. I would like to see a better view of the courts. What does the other side of the tuck look like? Will it have the back pattern or continue the pattern seen in the photo? Your back designs are some of the best in the business; so don't be shy to promote it, unless there's a theme you have in mind.

You also have some of the best Ace of Spades designs as well. That AoS matches the title of the deck. So far, the title Exquisite matches what you've shown us.

Will you go the way of JR and Lotrek by always having a standard deck in stock? This deck would be an excellent choice. Fully custom, yet not so custom that it can be used for game nights. However, it would be good to put the indices on the courts for the standard version for fast and easy card recognition if it's not on the LE.

Hey, Jody. Nice work so far, and I'm glad you're looking for feedback. :)

A few observations:

* I love the tucks. I love the card backs (assuming we're dealing with foil or a very shiny metallic ink on the card backs.) The two seem to mostly go together, which is also a strong plus.
* I strongly like the number cards (that I can make out). I like the court cards (that I can make out.) Either go well with the card backs. But, they don't go well with each other:
** the courts have a shaded background enclosed by a strong defined border. The number cards do not.
** the number cards have an index value and suit in the upper left-hand corner. The courts have no value index and the suit index doesn't match the representation on the number cards (certainly in size, but the shading in the background also fundamentally changes the image of the detail work in the suit).
** The courts and number cards simply evoke different responses. That 5 of Hearts looks elegant and stately. Refined. Pristine. The courts presented look lived in (in a good way, don't get me wrong.) Courtly as opposed to stately.

Those are a few thoughts based upon a first impression. I look forward to seeing more as this develops!

I really like the direction Jody is taking since Luminosity. I liked what he did before but I LOVE what he is doing now. One suggestion for these new decks is to not use silver foil on both the decks. Maybe bring that gorgeous copper he used for Luminosity on one of these decks as well.

I think the courts look very nice. I am excited for this but I agree with rousselle in that the number cards don't seem to match the theme of the courts. If I saw them separately, I would guess they come from two different decks.

My apologies, I couldn't post another comment so soon after starting the topic.

Here are some images of courts as well as the number cards.

My biggest concern has been the courts not matching the number cards. Not for the sake of style, but that the indices don't match up. I usually think of the courts as more distinctive than the number cards, so I felt that I can take some liberties with the courts. My desire is to be able to make the King, Queen and Jacks much larger and make the symbols smaller.

I am not convinced I need to change anything, but I can be persuaded.

Thanks all for the amazing feedback. Keep it coming.

Jody

This helps a lot. This picture of the number cards shows there is more connectivity with the court cards than I originally thought. I think the courts are simply amazing.

The Spade courts need more shading. They look too flat vs. the other courts shadows. Just my OCD, sorry.

Jody, I agree about the indices- I hate how small they are on the court cards. Very off-putting. If that could be changed I think it would go a long way to making this amazing.

Seeing now that the nunber pips are in line with the courts as far as style. I don't mind how they are now, even if the indices aren't the same size and placement on he number and court cards.

I agree. The indexes seem rather small on the court cards. ....however, that won't stop me from buying these beautiful cards. :D

Nice! They look even better than what we could see with the sneak preview.

2 quibbles:

1) Agree that the courts pip should be smaller. But as others have mentioned, I would like the indicies to be bigger .
2) Really don't like the QoS and QoH having their heads cut off by the border. The other courts look ok as it's their headwear. can't see to clearly for the QoD, but she looks like her hair is cutoff, not her forehead.

On another note, is it just me or does the KoS supposed to resemble Henry VIII and QoS resemble QE 1?

The colorfulness of the court cards makes the numbered cards look quite plain and to me, it is too much of a contrast. Maybe add a little color to the background of the number cards to bring them closer to the courts?
