Mors Vincit Omnia - Playing Cards now live on KS

Unread post by erniesthings »

Artist Shawn Coss, through his business Any Means Necessary will be launching a KS campaign this Thursday 6/13/2019. Looks to be printed through USPCC.
These are the preview pics so far.
I'm digging the Queen, but not the Jack so much.

I dont know if those black borders are part of the deck. I like the images, but that border kills it for me.

Really cool art style. It will come down to the tuck case and pips for me to get really excited but I love this start. I'm curious why he is using a dividing banner on the Jack but no divider on the Queen...I think I prefer the look without the divider, but it should at least be consistent across the board. Thanks for sharing this erniesthings

I like the Queen as well and the pips are pretty cool. The J and the Q font don't match imo. I'm sure these may just not be the finished versions. I am looking forward to seeing the rest though.

The J and the Q font don't match!
ftfy

They are different fonts and different styles, so unless this will be another "Ultimate deck" - which I doubt since the art style of the characters is similar - that should be fixed before printing. Same goes for the banner.
Overall a promising deck for fans of morbid designs. Definetly on my "tell me more"-pile.
You want to reclaim your mind and get it out of the hands of the cultural engineers who want to turn you into a half-baked moron consuming all this trash that’s being manufactured out of the bones of a dying world.

Only a $500 goal for a deck printed by USPCC (er, "produced by Bicycle"), and a whole bunch of the rewards aren't cards. Hope he knows what he's doing.

The tuck looks bland to me. Anyway, at 33$ a deck with shipping, it was bound to never happen for me.

Printed by bicycle, yikes. Curious as to why the creator didn't post a back design. Has he not done that yet? Also the box seems eerily similar to the bone and ebon design

I'm afraid you'll have to watch the video to have a peek at the back design.

Thanks, I usually don't watch the promo vids and it's become a habit. Anyways, I hate the back design... There seems to be alot of empty space and it just looks basic. The tuck box also doesn't seem embossed or anything in the video. I was thinking about pledging but I'm definitely not now. The courts are alright but everything else is just ass for me :x

Now that the campaign has launched I am just...whelmed. I think his artwork is incredible but I think the end result as a deck is a letdown for me. The color of the tuck case doesn't fit with the rest of the deck, in my opinion. Another thing that bothers me is the standard red and standard blue used on the faces. I think both need to be darker which would lend itself better to the overall morbid theme of the deck. This deck might be tricky to use for game play as well. The example they shared of the 7s look like they could be 2s as well, so the font might be a bit too decorative.

That being said, I am glad he has funded this campaign. The artwork deserves to be appreciated by as many people as possible. I do wonder where Bicycle comes into play, though. The deck doesn't appear to be Bicycle branded, though we don't get to see the back of the tuck.
300 gsm linen
Isn't the linen finish something that MPC uses? I was thinking Bicycle used a crushed stock but I am not as familiar with all of the printers.

After seeing the campaign finally up, I'm more than a little underwhelmed. Shawn is a great artist with a huge following. I expected his campaign to be a success just based on that. This deck had a lot of potential coming from Shawn, I'm wondering if designing an entire deck of cards was a bit more than he expected. Repeating courts are just lazy.

My son and I both collect and he had in internship with Shawn and his company last fall. He asked for help on what to do for a nice deck of cards. He was shown quite a few good decks of cards and some ones that we not that good. With the low goal and some of the generic "bicycle" language, I don't think he looked in to any real quotes with USPCC for the printing. If the end up printed with USPCC, it looks like one of the only suggestions he actually listened to.

I've set a reminder for this one. This is the sort of deck I'd be fine with picking up a single of, but the single deck is cost prohibitive and no EB's...

They're both horned skeletons in front of a vaguely Solomonic seal, so it's inevitable that they'll have a similar vibe. Given that, though, I don't think one looks any more like the other than, say, any given black metal album with a Viking ship on the cover looks like any other black metal album with a Viking ship on the cover.

That said, there is enough of a "family resemblance" that it's worthwhile to compare them. Mors suffers from this comparison in... basically every way. The composition is more muddled, half-oval and half-pyramid; the pose (particularly in the arrangements of the hands) is less interesting; and the anatomy is sloppier - compare the elbows of both figures. The seal is also more structurally erratic; whereas Ebon's is built entirely around circles and quadrangles, Mors has circles, triangles, quadrangles, hexagons... it's just all over the place. Even the decks's name seems to be on a different arc than the banner it's on (that is, if you laid the banner out flat, the words wouldn't run parallel to the edges).

For $500 USPCC might let you use the office inkjet. No idea if you can run 300gsm linen stock through a Hewlett-Packard all-in-one.

I like the deck. There are too many red flags for me (printed by bicycle?!?), and the price is too steep
