"56 completely custom playing cards" is stretching the truth ever so slightly for a deck that has repeating courts and standard pips. Also, something about the joker does not sit right with me.

I like the card backs.

I wish I liked the courts more.

However, repeating courts makes this an automatic pass for me.
This space intentionally left blank.

Gakondo is definitely going to have a massively better African artwork. Possibly going live in July, date to be determined and run by Jacks and Jokers 8-)

When I learned about an "African Deck" of playing card, it immediately picked my interest and I rushed over the KS campaign to check it out. Only to find out what was a misguided, offending misrepresentation of Africa and African cultures. The Nilo Deck boasts its African inspired designs, but greatly lacks in research.

The art on the deck appears to be misguided and the representation of "African cultures" feels appropriated and misrepresented. I personally think the characters represented and the patterns and outfits are closer to certain South American cultures (this is an opinion based on my poor understanding and knowledge of latin American cultures) than African cultures. In addition, the immense variety of African cultures makes it nearly impossible to create an "African deck" without specifying at least the regions or cultures that inspired it since there is no such thing as an "African culture".

The Nilo deck represents a stereotype and poor attempt at representing a rich and diverse continent with thousands of cultures inhabiting it. I for one as a proud "African" will not support this deck for the resons mentioned, but I would proudly support a deck backed with deep understanding and research.
