Jungle Lost Deer Playing Cards / Live KS by..Bocopo?

Unread post by Decknowledgy »

I won't bother to post the photos, but Bocopo is getting sketchier by the day using different account names to put out projects like this. They've used the account name "Stone" for the Oriental Memory set, and now this "sandy" for this project... People have mentioned in the comment section questioning the authenticity of "sandy," but Bocopo has since posted the photos of this campaign on their IG account. Anyone wondering why they're using this scheme for their KS projects?

So far Bocopo's accounts on KS:
Bocopo Playing Cards Company
BOCOPO BICYCLE
Magic Square X BOCOPO Playing Card Co.
Stone
sandy

If you're in the market for courts featuring unidentifiable wire-frame blobs and were unsatisfied with other wire-frame blob decks, this one's for you!

I honestly like the deck, but there are too many red flags in this for my to comfortably back it.

I did back this one. 8 bucks for a deck isn't too bad and while a lot of cardistry decks aren't for me, this one is orange lol.

I'm game for the tuck design, I think the deer looks good with orange. Not a huge fan of the courts, but they're orange too!

One deck of these isn't going to kill me for that price.

Agreed on the deck though. I would prefer these over the first edition though. But both will definetly never be in my collection.

Is this not a recolour of the forest deer deck from last year. If so, it is definitely a Bocopo deck.

Something weird is going on - the Kickstarter for this project has been suspended as of 7 hours ago.

I have the green and purple Lost Deer decks, and personally I really like the court cards - I only wish they'd made the images a little bigger.

I saw someone on Reddit discussing this as well. I guess in the comments of the campaign, the rumor is Bocopo (or their alias) was busted for using multiple accounts and violating the "one project at a time" rule. *shrug* Weird indeed

Don't worry, if you want the deck, I am sure it will be available soon as I suspect that the decks are already printed, like most, if not all of Bocopo's KS decks. Thats also probably why the campaign was suspended...KS probably saw that EPCS was advertising the deck in China on their website. Funny enough, you can't access the page for this deck on the EPCS Taobao site as of this morning.

As for the courts, what's to like? They are just colored silhouettes with connected lines. Another lazy deck by Bocopo that I can't understand for the life of me why is in its THIRD color :?
A deck a day helps keep the addiction at bay!

After the Oriental Memory incidents including the creator "Stone" which is also an account by Bocopo, the artwork plagiarizing a book series, and the eventual crafty use of the non-KS Chinese messaging app to inform backers that the final product cannot be produced and thus they will be refunded (a way to evade a bad reputation on KS), Bocopo has evidently become one of my most hated companies worthy to be blacklisted by everyone.

I mean we all know that both Bocopo and TCC are using KS as a storefront to sell and market decks that are evidently produced beforehand, but TCC at least sticks to their account and doesn't get involved in plagiarism trouble or seeking ways to exploit KS regulation loopholes. Bocopo is just otherworldly sly and deceitful for the sake of cash grab.

Don't back Bocopo's KS projects. Period.
If you're really interested, at least wait until the final product is sold through retailers.

As of 10pm May 6th, EST, this project got suspended by KS. Half of the comments thought Sandy was ripping off Bocopo's jungle deck.

It has been tweaked a bit, but pretty much the same. Do you know when if it was posted before or after the deck was made and if the picture was copyrighted?

I don't know much about copyright law. If it was publicly posted without specifically being copyrighted, is it illegal?

Doesn't really matter to me, this isn't a practice I'd like to support either way.

Copyright law obviously varies by country, but from copyright.gov, the US gov't site on copyright:

"Do I have to register with your office to be protected?

No. In general, registration is voluntary. Copyright exists from the moment the work is created."

Unless rights are specifically released/waived or have expired, copyright exists. If I draw a poorly executed stick figure, scan it, and upload it to UC, it's copyrighted, and if you want to use a stick figure for a commercial venture, you'll have to either draw or license your own.

Establishing true copyright in court in case of a dispute does require some kind of evidence that you are the proper creator/owner. It was common practice among writers for a long time to mail themselves a copy of their own manuscripts and keep that postmarked (with a date) copy sealed, so that if unscrupulous editors used the submitted work without paying for it, the sealed copy would provide evidence of the theft.

Thanks. I was just curious. Illegal or not, I agree it's not a great practice to reward.

Again, not trying to defend, just playing advocate:
I see the design as 4 different sections all of which can be easly recreated in illustrator. The Deer silhouette, the splatter effect, and a fill of watercolor. All obtainable from sites like freepik.com (full transparency, I use freepik at work and have a subscription) that offer licenses for exactly things like this project. That said, how do you define infringement if all the art is royalty free, can be recreated with anyone remotely familiar with illustrator, and not being sold as it is?

I found the direct image (same shape, different colors) here:

And here (Pinterest links to this as well):

So... I think that doesn't apply to the adaptation you were saying, mac?

Thats exactly my point. People use site like Freepik to get graphics to make things to sell. Its like an Etsy art repository. Masking a shape with a custom infill for anyone is hardly original, but it is what people buy. Assuming they have a Premium license, which is cheap, they can use any graphics they want from the site in their "art". These types of graphics are literally designed to be modified, copied, and used. Its not an exclusive relationship with the artist.

I would argue that any artist that is claiming work they made from clip art that was ripped off, needs to reevaluate. There are standard techniques and tools that are used to create lowgrade art like Bocopo does. Its not original, but I wouldnt call it ripping off. Based on what I have seen, Bocopo is just full of designers, not artists. If they are really ripping off other artists, instead of being lazy, I would like to see an example of their work that I CANT pull off a royalty free graphics site.

Attached are 3 examples, that took literally less than 5 minutes in Illustrator. Are they unoriginal? Yup. Are they Illegal? No. Under the licensing agreement I pay for with Freepik, I can use these "designs" I created in any way, medium, or product that I want to, as long as I am not selling the original art used to create them.

Link to the Agreement: https://www.freepik.com/standard-license

man...I dont think "Concise answer" is even in my vocabulary...
